Summary About the position: This position will be assigned to Outdoor Recreation on Edwards AFB, CA. Physical Effort: Moderately heavy physical effort is required in occasionally lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds and in loading items into trucks. Frequently lifts, carries, pushes and moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Responsibilities A Small Engine Mechanic at Outdoor Recreation: Provides repair and maintenance on regular gas and bio-diesel powered small engines. Uses a variety of hand tools of the trade to perform tasks . Types of equipment include: lawnmowers, weed eaters, boat motors, edger, tillers, aerators, tractors, forklifts, and engines. Performs preventative maintenance such as: changes oil and filters, changes spark plugs and wires, packs wheelbearings, charges batteries, changes boat propellers, and changes mower and edger blades. Calibrates or set equipment to manufacturers' specifications. Changes tires on various types of equipment. Schedules routine maintenance for equipment and ensures parts are available for needed repairs. Performs minor repairs to trailers such as: changes tires, fixes faulty electrical connections on trailer hook-ups, fixes brakes and lights. Must be able to determine when a trailer needs to be taken in for service or other major repairs. Cleans campers and boats. Washes vehicles and equipment. During winter months, shovels snow. Sweeps ODR yard. Operates floor jacks, cuts wood, loads and unloads equipment or vehicles. Repairs rental bikes to ensure they are in working order. Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds such as: bouncy trailers, grills, tires, gas cans, and propane tanks. Ensures work area is kept clean and free of hazards. Complies with all safety and fire standards, regulations, and policies. Operates a government vehicle on an installation going from one facility to another. Works uncommon tour of duty to include: days, nights, weekends, holidays, and down days. Keeps supervisor informed when parts and/or tools are needed. Reports all major damage to equipment to supervisor in a timely manner. Performs other related duties as assigned. CONTROLS OVER WORK: Incumbent makes independent judgements and decisions within the framework of oral and written instructions and accepted methods, techniques and procedures. Supervisor may check work in progress or review after completion. OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS: I. Skill and Knowledge: Must be able to diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions on various types of equipment used in Outdoor Recreation. A certain degree of manual skill is required in the safe use of hand tools and in operating simple powered equipment. Continual care must be exercised by the incumbent due to the nature of the too ls and equipment used, and the weight of the objects handled. Must be able to calibrate or set equipment to manufacturers' specifications. 2. Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather (excessive heat, wind s, rain, etc.) and inside areas that may be dusty, drafty, and noisy. Mishandling of equipment, tools and tasks involved may result .in injuries that are more serious. Continuous standing, walking, stooping, and lifting is required. Certain risks are assumed due to the nature of machinery being repaired and maintained. 4.Must meet deadlines and complete assignments with an acceptable level of accuracy. Maintains professional customer service. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing. Regularly keeps supervisor informed of progress and advises supervisor of any problems or unusual situations that may impact operations. Ensures compliance with fire and safety standards, regulations. and policies. Performs assigned duties and tasks in a reasonable amount of time with little or no supervision. Must have experience in the safe use of hand tools and in operating simple powered equipment. Must posses a valid drivers license and be able to obtain a government drivers license. Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical and be able to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment drug test and random tests thereafter. Must satisfactorily complete background investigative checks.
