What is a Roving Chief Mechanic Operator?

This is a top-level union position within the Roving Mechanic Operator (RMO) progression. The Chief RMO reports to the Production Foreman and is responsible for providing work assignments to and working with the RMO’s to perform duties associated with the construction, operation, and maintenance of the Company’s production plants.

What does a Roving Chief Mechanic Operator do?

  • The primary work of the Chief RMO is to perform the necessary duties associated with the Company’s Production Plants under general supervision, including:

  • To make work assignments directing the work of the RMOs and any other classifications assigned to work with the RMOs at any of Company's Production Plants; to do the work of and to work with as well as to direct the employees so engaged.

  • To ensure adherence to safety protocols and procedures and continually foster a culture of safety awareness within the department and Production Plants.

  • To conduct the work in an economical and diligent manner; to operate those production plants not normally manned on a continuous basis to meet system requirements and all regulatory/ environmental standards.

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance in troubleshooting all mechanical issues, ensuring timely resolution to minimize loss of production. Provide training and support to crew members as needed on a continual basis.

  • If the need arises, under general supervision, direct the work of RMOs, or, if working as a joint crew not in a Production Plant, assist in the performance of work which they are trained and qualified to carry out, consistent with the work performed by other trades within Substation Operations in the performance of construction, maintenance and repair work in Substations, Company’s Offices, properties, and rights-of-way.

What does it take to be a Roving Chief Mechanic Operator?

Required:

  • Evidence of successful completion of the requirements for graduation from High School or an Equivalency Diploma

  • 6.5+ years of practical experience working in a related field such as turbines, generators, boilers, and/or other equipment

  • Possess good mechanical ability

  • Must have sufficient leadership ability to direct/oversee the activities of the employees assigned

  • Must obtain a valid Commercial Drivers Class A permit within 6 months of entering the classification and a Commercial Drivers Class A license within 12 months of entering the classification

  • Possess a Valid Driver’s License and maintain any license requirements of the job

Preferred:

  • Valid Commercial Drivers Class A License

  • Previous experience in power plant operation/maintenance within the utility and/or construction industry

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner, computer literate with ability to learn new programs quickly

  • Possess strong mechanical ability, troubleshooting skills, and ability to read blueprints and technical manuals, able to take and interpret precision measurements

  • Strong problem-solving ability, basic mechanical and math skills, and a high level of attention to detail

  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills to ensure that necessary documentation is accurately maintained

  • The ability to become proficient in the operation of multiple generating facilities quickly, including all associated equipment and systems

  • Excellent analytical, project management and evaluation skills

  • The ability to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast-paced work environment; must be proactive and flexible while handling multiple assignments and meeting deadlines

  • Be a self-motivated team player with the ability to effectively manage and motivate a diverse team

  • Experience in welding/metal fabrication/pipe fitting, crane operation/rigging

  • Experience with union agreements, labor relations and the collective bargaining process

  • Hydro plant experience

  • Experience with pneumatics and hydraulics
