UPMC Lead Patient Care Technician - 8 East General Surgery in Erie, Pennsylvania

UPMC Hamot is seeking a Full-Time Lead Patient Care Technician (PCT) to join our 8 East team.

This leadership position involves 12-hour shifts with a day/night rotation. The Lead PCT will play a key role in skills labs and staff education. A minimum of 3 years of previous experience at UPMC is highly preferred.

8 East is a 23-bed medical-surgical unit providing care to medical patients and postoperative care for colon-rectal, general surgery, urology, neurosurgery, and ENT patients. This unit offers a great opportunity for graduate nurses or those looking to build a solid foundation in med/surg while expanding their knowledge of a diverse patient population. 8 East is a team-driven unit providing patient-centered care, specializing in services such as TPN, wound vac management, and ostomies with the support of our skilled wound ostomy nurses. Nurses are trained in foley insertions requiring further intervention and assist other departments in managing patients who are difficult to catheterize.

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care & Support: Provide direct patient care, assisting with activities of daily living, patient procedures, and therapies including physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary.

  • Clinical Tasks: Perform UPMC core nursing assistant duties such as blood glucose monitoring, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care, and restraint application/removal.

  • Advanced Clinical Duties: Perform additional tasks such as simple dressing changes, bladder scans, straight catheterization, IV catheter removal, and point-of-care testing. May assist with complex wound care, 12-lead EKGs, NG tube clamping/removal, and more, based on department needs.

  • Patient Education: Provide instruction to patients and families under the direction of the RN.

  • Team Collaboration: Communicate effectively with the healthcare team, fostering a supportive and respectful environment. Participate in unit activities including responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.

  • Feedback & Improvement: Constructively receive feedback and direction, identify learning needs, and take action to improve knowledge and performance. Assist with planning and prioritizing activities.

  • Staff Support & Development: Actively participate in the onboarding and precepting of new staff. Shadow and support new team members as needed. Contribute to department projects, quality initiatives, and committee participation.

  • Operational Support: Ensure equipment malfunctions are reported and assist with clerical functions as needed. Model and support UPMC Experience Initiatives, including AIDET coaching, rounding, and 90-day check-ins.

  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere to all safety policies and standard precautions and comply with hospital protocols. Document patient care accurately according to established procedures.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • 3 years of healthcare experience required.

  • Successful completion of PCT Senior training (if not already completed at time of hire).

  • Successful completion of basic information systems training.

  • Microcomputer experience preferred.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program, preferred.

  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of medication to the nurse.

  • May, in the course of their duties, be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when transporting patients. Transportation of medications is limited to moving them from one department to another.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR certification required, based on AHA standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components within 30 days of hire.

  • ACLS certification preferred.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.

  • Act 34 clearance.
