The Staff Product Engineer will be responsible for leading the design, development, and deployment of Digital Onboard Solutions Engineering (DOSE) Application Tools technology. The Application Tools product line is comprised of a suite of PC and cloud-based Tools. Additionally, the successful candidate will work closely with Product Management, Program Management and railroad customers to develop world class solutions that bring advanced automation and data analytics to the rail industry with high quality and reliability. The Staff Product Engineer will be the technical architect developing long term strategy for the Application Tools product line by leveraging industry experience, input from customers and collaboration with Product Management. The Staff Product Engineer will be the focal point for all technical inquiries for the engineering department with respect to Application Tools product line. They will interact with both internal and external engineering organizations to steward the Application Tools product line through all product lifecycle phases.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead future concepts and design enhancements for the Transport Intelligence products using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.

  • Support development of the R&D strategy for the product

  • Serve as a primary customer contact for the Transport Intelligence product line. Translate customer needs / requirements, resolve specification issues, handle technical correspondence, provide periodic updates, ensure customer satisfaction, and negotiate / coordinate with cross-functional teams as appropriate.

  • Provide guidance to the internal engineering teams on design tradeoff considerations during the development lifecycle

  • Be a Technical Leader for the projects across global cross-functional teams (Product / Program Management, SW COE, Electrical Integration, Train Control, Office Systems, Safety, Validation and Applications Engineering) assuring “cradle to grave” success.

  • Participate in the development of proposals for projects.

  • Work with Wabtec’s scientific community and railroad subject matter experts to develop freight automation solutions, evaluate them in field trials and productize the solutions to function in a railroad revenue environment.

  • Lead and participate in technical and program reviews.

  • Maintain broad awareness of technical trends to ensure technical quality excellence, timely completion of work, and reviews and responsiveness to customer/program needs.

  • Work collaboratively with the Global Supply Chain Organization across the various locations to support procurement of parts from an engineering requirements perspective.

  • Provide technical input to customer facing documentation such as but not limited to product descriptions, operational manuals, installation instructions, troubleshooting guides, and product marketing material.

  • Interface with the Global Locomotive Operations group to ensure factory-built locomotives are manufactured successfully and delivered to customers in a timely manner.

  • Provide design input into external teams for locomotive integration of Digital Solutions products.

  • Manage program execution of engineering team to deliver on time, within budget, and meet contractual obligations

  • Highlight dependencies to Project Management Organization (PMO) and escalate engineering impeding items

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum of 5 years hands-on design, requirements development and implementation experience involving; Engineering Systems, Hardware / Software Engineering, and/or Data Information Systems.

  • Minimum 1 years experience with Locomotive Control Systems

  • Locomotive control systems experience

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience with communication systems

  • Experience in computer networking

  • Experience in software deployment and configuration management

  • Proven ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment.

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science.

  • Locomotive Systems Design Experience.

  • Railroad Industry Experience.

  • Prior system design experience with large-scale wireless communication-based projects.

  • Experience working in the Agile Development Environment

  • Self-starter with the ability to lead design efforts with minimum supervision.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Knowledge of AAR and CENELEC standards for the rail industry

  • Desire to be involved in hiring and onboarding process of future team members

  • Interest in people leadership
