Statement of Job:

The University of Maine at Farmington and the Fitness and Recreation Center (FRC) are seeking an enthusiastic and responsible individual to join our team as a Summer Daze Camp Counselor for grades 1 through 6. As a Camp Counselor, you will be responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and fun environment for campers while fostering their physical, social, and emotional development through various recreational activities. This position will also work closely with the director of the program to ensure operations run smoothly.

Dates of Camp: June 19, 2024 through August 9, 2024, with one week off in July (exact dates to be determined).

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, flexible scheduling to accommodate camp activities. The total workweek is 32 hours.

Essential Responsibilities - Responsibilities are a representative sample of essential duties

  • Provides constant supervision to ensure the safety of campers during all activities, including during meals, recreational activities, and field trips.

  • Plans and leads age-appropriate activities and games that promote physical activity , creativity, teamwork, and social interaction .

  • Maintains a positive and inclusive camp environment.

  • Addresses camper behavior issues promptly and appropriately.

  • Uses positive reinforcement and redirection techniques.

  • Assists campers with daily tasks.

  • Provides updates on camper progress, concerns, and achievements.

  • Implements and enforces safety protocols and procedures to minimize risks.

  • Responds promptly to medical emergencies or incidents, adhering to camp protocols and procedures.

  • Serves as a positive role model for campers by demonstrating good sportsmanship, respect for others, and enthusiasm for learning and participating in activities .

  • Collaborates with other counselors and camp staff to ensure smooth operations, coordinate schedules, and support each other in providing a fun and safe camp experience.

  • Monitors and assists campers during mealtimes, ensuring they follow proper hygiene practices and dietary restrictions as needed.

  • Handles emergencies or unexpected situations.

    Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.

  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification at the time of hire

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children in a camp, recreational, or educational setting.

  • Valid Driver's License (in good standing, based on UMS standards).

    Working Conditions - The individual in this position should be able to perform in the following working conditions with or without accommodation.

  • Consistently works in both indoor and outdoor settings.

  • Occasionally works in inclement weather.

  • Duties require frequent physical activity.

  • Frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, pinching, and grasping.

  • Exerts up to twenty (20) pounds of force and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or consistently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

  • Occasionally travels to various locations for camp functions.
