Special Information

  • This is a full time 40 hour/week position based in Flagstaff, AZ, with In-Person (on NAU\'s Mountain campus), In-State Hybrid, and In-State Remote modalities available. Candidates must live within the state of Arizona.

Job Description

Under the supervision of the Director of NAU Online, Instructional Design & Support, the Instructional Designer (ID), Senior consults and collaborates with team members, faculty, and staff to design, produce, build, and support high-quality, instructionally effective courses to be delivered asynchronously online. The Senior ID assesses needs, designs processes, develops materials, and evaluates the effectiveness of materials created for courses in alignment with departmental curricula and best practices. The Senior ID guides, trains, and supports team members in the use of instructionally appropriate techniques, tools, and media. The Senior ID keeps the Director apprised of needed resources, tools, trainings, and equipment. The Senior ID keeps abreast of current research, trends, and practices in instructional design and educational technology in higher education.

Collaborative Course Design and Building - 50%

  • Works with NAU faculty in the development, implementation, building, and ongoing assessment of online courses and materials for partnered degree programs.
  • Cultivates and maintains productive professional relationships with faculty, staff, colleagues, and others to further the work of NAU Online and the mission of the university.
  • Draws on accepted educational theories and instructional design best practices to promote creative and effective uses of educational technologies and instructional media.
  • Incorporates tools in course development specifically focused on improving active learning participation in delivered courses.
  • Guides, trains, coaches, and supports faculty in using instructionally appropriate techniques, tools, and media.
  • Recommends the adoption of new tools, practices, and policies.
  • Collaborates with NAU Online\'s Creative Design Group to inform and obtain high-quality rich content course graphics and instructional media.
  • Collaborates with NAU Online\'s Instructional Design and Support (ID&S) staff to ensure consistency, continuity, and alignment with other curated university courses and industry best practices.
  • Maintains working knowledge of and observes regulations for copyright and intellectual property laws and policies.

Quality Review and Assurance - 25%

  • Conducts course quality reviews, emphasizing instructional soundness, clarity, current pedagogical best practices, and the acquisition of meaningful data from course assessments.
  • Provides tactful feedback and champions changes to improve courses and programs.
  • Ensures the quality and compliance of course development with university and industry standards, best practices, and security requirements.
  • Participates in the NAU E-Learning Center quality assurance initiative.

Project Management and Collaborative Work - 10%

  • Adheres to timelines, milestones, and benchmarks for success.
  • Generates updates and progress reports.
  • Consults with project teams and entities, and with NAU Online leadership.
  • Provides ongoing support and design initiatives for technology-related instructional design products.
  • Creates, identifies content for, and helps maintain an online library of resources related to course design, best practices in teaching and learning, and innovative learning activities and assessments.
  • Adjusts project workflows and priorities as directed or as needed to meet deadlines and ensure aligned outcomes.
  • Affords the Director regular updates and/or written documentation of project progress.
  • Works with university IDs and technicians to propose, test, and integrate curricula development products into NAU\'s LMS.
  • Attends and contributes to departmental meetings and maintains open communications with NAU Online ID&S staff.
  • Supervises the work of student worker instructional designers.
