Job Description

This is fourth in a series of five classifications and is distinguished from the Corporal by the formalized supervisory role over Police Officers and administrative duties. It is distinguished from the Police Lieutenant in that Sergeants are frequently in the field and considered first-line supervisors rather than part of administration as are Police Lieutenants. Incumbents typically report to Police Lieutenants and have Police Officers, Police Corporals and student workers as subordinates. Incumbents are required to maintain flexible schedules in order to accommodate nighttime and weekend shifts. Incumbents experience hazardous or dangerous situations during the course of their work.

Duties of a Police Officer - 30%

  • Patrols campus on foot, a bicycle, and a vehicle to deter traffic violations and criminal activity and enforce federal and state laws as well as university regulations.
  • Engages with community members one on one and through meetings and oral presentations to provide education on numerous topics to include, but not limited to, personal safety and property security, crime prevention and laws and regulations.
  • Constantly analyzes the job for improvements to, or modifications of, university law enforcement services and makes recommendations to department management.
  • Responds to and investigates calls for service from the community to include, but not limited to, reports of emergencies, unlawful activity, suspicious activity, traffic issues, alarms, missing persons, animal complaints and requests for general assistance, motorist assistance and complaints. Makes decisions based on analysis of situation and all known facts.
  • Identifies unsafe conditions or areas ripe for criminal activity; reports conditions and takes corrective actions.
  • Investigates all types of crimes and accidents; performs follow-up duties on crimes/accidents; interviews suspects and witnesses; collects evidence and facts; serves warrants, subpoenas, or other court processes as necessary; prepares detailed written departmental reports and files any additional paperwork/reports as directed by federal, state, or local legal requirements.
  • Compiles daily reports on law enforcement activities for department management.
  • Appears in court to provide testimony on investigations.
  • Participates in ongoing and recurring trainings as required by the department and its accrediting agencies, the university, and the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training board.
  • Trains sworn and non-sworn personnel on departmental policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Works with the university community, general public and partner agencies to solve concerns.
  • Maintains knowledge of, and answers questions about, campus operation and law enforcement.

Supervisory Duties - 30%

  • Monitors the activities of subordinates.
  • Analyzes activity reports to determine levels of performance or need for corrective action.
  • Arranges work schedule to ensure patrol coverage by assigned staff.
  • Reviews essential information at beginning of new shift; conducts briefing session; answers questions, participates in discussion of information and provides in-service training.
  • Analyzes reports prepared and submitted by subordinates for accuracy, completeness, essential elements, fundamental soundness, and substantiation of action taken.
  • Disseminates applicable new and revised policies and procedures to subordinates; explains implications.
  • Analyzes difficult situations or problems presented by subordinate staff and recommends action to be taken or appropriate method or procedure to their supervisor.
  • Compiles information for and writes periodic statistical reports on work unit activities and submits to supervisor.
  • Attends supervisory staff meetings; gives and receives information; participates in problem solving; recommends policy changes and program development to superiors.
  • Investigates complaints against staff in accordance with policy; recommends action to be taken.
