Flint Community Schools Physical Education/Health Teacher - Middle School in Flint, Michigan

Job Summary:

Plans, implements, and assesses a program of instruction that adheres to the district's mission, philosophy and objectives while creating a nurturing and stimulating learning environment in which every student is expected to reach their own academic potential.  Develops in each pupil an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil's ability.

Flint Community Schools, an urban public school system with campuses throughout the City of Flint, Michigan, has a long and rich tradition of community education. Flint Community Schools provide a range of academic, extended services and extracurricular activities at the elementary and secondary levels to meet the needs of our students and their families.

Essential Functions:

  1. Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
  3. Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  4. Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible.
  5. May teach Physical Education classes for special education pupils, interscholastic athletics, or drill team to senior high pupils.
  6. Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of pupils.
  7. Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property.
  8. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
  9. Evaluates each pupil's growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
  10. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self selected professional growth activities.
  11. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
  12. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  13. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
  14. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  15. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.

Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor's degree in physical education or related field.  Michigan Teacher Certification at appropriate

Skills:

  • The ability to work cooperatively on a teaching team.
  • The ability to communicate with students effectively through speaking, reading, and writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office, Internet, Email and On-line grading.
  • Knowledge of common assessments and teaching methods.
