Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Fire Ecology Lab is within the Department of Forest & Rangeland Stewardship at Colorado State. This position will work closely with the Rocky Mountain Research Station in Fort Collins, CO. And this is part of a larger project funded by the Washington Office of the Forest Service.

Position Summary

The Fire Ecology Lab is within the Department of Forest & Rangeland Stewardship at Colorado State University is hiring for a Fire Scientist Post Doc position to be located in Fort Collins, Colorado.

The primary objective of the planned research is to improve our understanding of the conditions under which fuel treatments produce desired socioecological outcomes when encountered by wildfire. To achieve this objective, we will develop and refine a core, scalable methodology that leverages existing spatial datasets on landscape characteristics, fire characteristics, and treatment characteristics. Specifically focusing on case studies of the Southern Rockies. The Post-doc is expected to contribute to collaborative projects and to the publication of peer-reviewed journal papers and non-technical products for diverse audiences on wildfire treatment outcomes.

This Post doc position is specifically tasked with contributing geospatial technical and analytical skills towards developing and customizing treatment layers and wildfire remotely sensed data in Colorado and the Interior West. The incumbent will be responsible for spatial data productionand analysis using remote sensing and field-based technologies ( GPS ), spatial data management, spatial analysis to support science and planning initiatives, and written and oral communication of spatial data and results of spatial analyses to diverse audiences.

This position is located in Fort Collins, and the incumbent is expected to work in-person in Fort Collins, though part-time telework may be optional.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Completed Ph.D. in forestry, ecology, natural resources, wildland fire science, geography, or a related field of study.

  • Experience producing, managing, analyzing, modeling, and communicating geospatial data within the ESRI GIS software.

  • Evidence of experience in big dataset, spatial statistics, and coding (R, python, etc)

  • Evidence of peer reviewed publications

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Programming experience, such as Python and/or R, for spatial data processing and analysis.

  • Experience automating spatial analysis workflows with remote sensing, multiple data types (spreadsheets, databases, raster and vector spatial data), big data, or spatial analysis across multiple software platforms.

  • Evidence of expertise in fire behavior and/or fire management in the western US

  • Evidence of expertise or experience using geospatial data analytics and products

  • Evidence of experience in collaborating, motivating and encouraging staff to perform at a high level

  • Evidence of professional oral communication to diverse audiences

  • Evidence of personal or professional commitment to diversity as demonstrated by persistent effort, active planning, allocation of resources and/or accountability for diversity outcomes.

  • Experience with fire behavior modeling programs (e.g., FlamMap, FSIM , etc).

  • Evidence of supervision of others in collaborative project settings

  • Knowledge of western US forest and fire ecology, wildfire management, and/or wildfire experience.

  • Contribute to the production, communication, and publication or dissemination of high-quality science-based products for use by managers and/or collaborative forestry groups

  • Prepare and deliver written products and oral presentations to policy-makers, program directors and program managers in federal, state, and local governmental, Tribal, non-governmental and community-based organizations involved in decision-making pertaining to forest management.

  • Prepare and deliver written products and oral presentations to scientists and technical analysts involved in research, development and applications pertaining to treatment effectiveness.

  • Develop methods for, conduct and report on periodic assessments of the effectiveness and work with others to understand the impacts of planning and decision-making systems and processes for prioritizing, planning, and tracking accomplishments and outcomes for forest wildfire management actions.
