Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology ( MIP ) Department is comprised of over 400 individuals who share a common passion for solving some of the most important human and animal health problems today. Research programs include those related to mycobacteria, retroviruses, prions, and arthropod-borne infectious diseases, as well as the diagnostic investigation of naturally-occurring animal diseases. A leader in education, MIP provides the only microbiology undergraduate degree program in Colorado, a graduate program that provides training in a number of cutting-edge disciplines, and several specialized veterinary residency training programs.

Position Summary

This Research Scientist position will consolidate an emerging research program pillar of Dr. Avanzi’s research program focused on the validating a new method to measure Mycobacterium leprae’s viability in human and mouse samples, by hiring a senior scientist to conduct advanced research and validation of the method, handle the day-to-day supervision and training of students, research associates and graduate student as well as some of the management and administrative aspects (decision making, report, grant/fellowship application and publication writing, coordination of work with internal and external collaborators, etc.) of this program.

Required Job Qualifications

  • PhD with at least 3 years of postdoctoral work

  • At least 5 years of molecular biology experience (amplification based-assays specifically digital PCR )

  • Experience working in a DNA / RNA laboratory and strong knowledge of molecular biology good practices.

  • Experience with RNA based assay and optimization of quantitative PCR

  • Experience in molecular biology and more specifically with DNA / RNA extraction, qPCR, RTqPCR, ddPCR.

  • Must be meticulous and detail-oriented

  • Experience supervising undergraduate students

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience monitoring inventory and ordering laboratory supplies.

  • Ability to maintain laboratory records.

  • Willingness to work with clinical samples.
