U.S. Army Corps of Engineers POWER PLANT MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR in Fort Gaines, Georgia

Summary About the Position: Independently determines work methods and directs maintenance activities, sets priorities, and identifies and resolves recurring and potential problems. Plans, directs, and oversees the daily operations of a system of large complex multi-purpose power project(s) that includes hydroelectric power plant(s), high voltage switchyard(s), and dam(s) with controlled spillways. Responsibilities Directs preventive and break-down maintenance to minimize equipment outage time and maintain maximum availability of equipment. Accomplishes maintenance of major equipment at times, and within time limits, coordinated with and allowed by the division. Plans and oversees daily maintenance of a hydroelectric power project to achieve most efficient utilization of equipment and personnel. Participates in planning and development of overall hydropower program by recommending policy changes, maintenance standards, O and M procedures, cost reductions, and personnel management Directs operations during emergencies, including equipment failures, power system emergencies (black-outs, brown-outs, frequency and voltage disturbance or complete power system collapse). Directs water releases during both abnormal and flood conditions in strict accordance with water release directives provided by Water Management, often with little or no advance notice. Participates in the planning and administration of both long and short-range programs relative to major maintenance problems on dam and related equipment. Adjusts both routine and emergency dam equipment maintenance outages to minimize impacts to power plant operations. Administers a safety program that covers several high hazard areas such as high voltage electricity, noise, large rotating machinery, respiratory hazards, fall hazards, and drowning hazards. Conducts all work in strict compliance with the Corps' Hazardous Energy Control Procedures. Administers an extensive and complex environmental program. Assures full compliance with EM 385-1-1, Safety and Health Requirements. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to lead or supervise as a POWER PLANT MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR . I have the ability to lead or supervise common power plant maintenance duties. I have the potential ability to assign work to plan the use of workers, equipment, facilities, materials and tools on a day-to-day or project-by-project basis. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey level employee who observes tasks in-progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Lead or Supervise Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work tasks require that the incumbent be capable of rapid simultaneous mental and muscular coordination in conjunction with eye and hand coordination to operate switches and controls in accordance with meter indications. In order to perform the maintenance, inspection and operation of power station equipment the incumbent may lift and carry heavy objects, climb and reach above the shoulders, stand, sit, crawl and kneel for prolonged periods of time and performs repeated bending. WORKING CONDITIONS: The incumbent will work primarily inside around machinery in operation; in close proximity to high and low voltage circuits and climbs stairs frequently. Sometimes work will be performed outside in weather of varying degree of temperature and humidity, in tight or cramped work spaces, on ladders or scaffolds and on slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Occasionally the incumbent will use solvents or de-greasing agents, be assigned to protracted or irregular hours of work, use both hands in water and be exposed to silica, asbestos, oil, grease, excessive noise, vibration, smoke and gas fumes. Personal protective safety devices will be supplied to the worker when in an area of hazardous exposure. Examples of devices are hard hats, safety shoes, safety goggles and glasses, fresh air breathing masks, gloves, dust and smoke respirators, ear muffs, insulated gloves and safety grounds. When in an area of hazardous exposure, the incumbent will wear the appropriate personal safety device. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required.
