Summary

As a Brokerage Operations Manager your primary focus is the development and management of all Freight Brokerage Carrier Sales Representatives within a given mode. Work in partnership with the Brokerage leadership and management team as they support the overall productivity and cost-effectiveness of the branch, ensuring permanent business. The Modal Operations Manager will drive operational efficiencies to bring down costs as well as working with the Carrier Procurement team to expand the Ryder System, Inc carrier network for a given mode, developing our current and future workforce talent, and collaborating with the Sales and Account Management teams to provide the best possible customer experience. This role will report to the Freight Brokerage Branch Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Training, Coaching and Developing Carrier Representatives to execute the SOP’s in place with a goal of 100% compliance and execution for the Modal team

  • Collaborate with the other department managers (Sales, Account Management, Accounting) to ensure each customer’s requirements on the operations level are understood and being fulfilled for every load.

  • Evaluate the performance for each customer to maximize profitability and volume as it correlates to our overall business strategy for each one.

  • Manage the load volume for each carrier representative to ensure workload is distributed as evenly as possible throughout the team.

  • Building a first in class employee culture.

  • Team Building and Operational team Management.

  • Maintain and relay current knowledge of legal regulations, industry trends, and best Logistics/Supply Chain practices; evaluate business operations and technology, processes, and/or technology.

  • Tracking production - Logging carrier communication & offers as well as ensuring their team is aggressively looking for and pursuing available trucks.

  • Manage carrier issues (fall offs, delays in transit, accessorial disputes, Freight Guard reporting, etc.).

  • Building an ever-growing carrier base and relationships to improve capacity and reduce cost of hire as well as make educated decisions on onboarding new carriers.

  • Ensure the Booking and Dispatch process is performed timely and correctly.

  • Manage After Hours Staffing and Performance. Evaluate carrier rep performance metrics and do reviews as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent Commercial and Sales Skills

  • The ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Market Knowledge – The operations manager should be an expert in every market, understanding capacity and carrier cost, to work with Sales and Account Management to establish realistic rates to maximize profit and minimize loss.

  • High level understanding of load Board Posting Management

  • MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.), intermediate required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required.

  • Bachelor's degree in business, logistics, supply chain or related field of study preferred.

  • Three (3) years or more in a management role preferred.
