Job Description

Tarleton University Libraries (http://www.tarleton.edu/library/) seeks highly qualified candidates for the Rickett Librarian I position located on Tarleton's Forth Worth campus.

Under the direction of the Rickett Library Manager, the primary function of this job is to provide delivery of services to reach populations of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff through the development of programs and practices in both online and in-person contexts. As a librarian, some holiday, evening, or weekend duties are required. Requires the ability to teach and/or work remotely at the University’s discretion.

Responsibilities:

40% Professional Librarian: Serve the community using expertise in reference, instruction, liaison, and professional duties.

Reference

  • Provides reference services through various communication methods to on-campus and off-campus students and faculty and keep accurate counts.

  • Develops and delivers necessary training for traditional and new reference services. Staffs Reference services as assigned.

  • Provides point-of-use instruction and assistance to individuals or groups as needed.

Instruction

  • Actively solicit, create and teach library instruction to support the university’s curriculum and students in both traditional and online formats.

  • Provides both general and subject-specific bibliographic instruction to classes as requested by faculty members which teach information literacy skills via embedded instruction, bibliographic sessions, video creation and instruction as necessary for student and faculty development.

  • Prepares instructional materials for classes and other groups as needed including but not limited to videos, LibGuides, pathfinders, and programming.

Subject Liaison

  • Serves as liaison to one or more academic departments, working with faculty to meet their information needs and the needs of their students.

  • Works with assigned departments and co-workers to enhance the library’s collections and act as a point of contact for services.

  • Collection development for reference, serials, and all academic areas of Rickett Library including evaluation, selection, and weeding.

Professional

  • Recommends policy and procedure changes as it deals with the library, instruction, reference, liaising, and services.

  • Actively develops and implements ideas for the promotion of the library to the university community including but not limited to programs, activities, and services.

  • Works within teams and departments to recommend and assess new programs, policies, procedures, and services.

  • Assists in covering library service points as needed.

  • Attend professional meetings and remain abreast of relevant current developments in the field Positively represent Tarleton State University in professional, community, and state organizations.

  • Maintains professional demeanor and appearance in representing the Library and the University.

  • Serves on university committees.

  • Attends meetings of faculty/staff. Maintains “open door” to internal and external customers.

  • Other duties as assigned.

30% Programming & Outreach: Responsible for programming and outreach primarily to the student community.

  • Responsible for developing and implementing outreach activities that promote library resources and services which can include but are not limited to presentations, organizing events, designing publications, exhibits and displays.

  • Organizes events/programs that advocate library resources and services and communicate with library staff, campus divisions, and departments promoting those events/programs

  • Designs publications, print and electronic, which promote library services and resources working with peers to create and sustain a unified message.

  • Represents the library at student orientations and other campus events.

30% Assist with day-to-day operations of circulation and interlibrary loan services ensuring a smooth workflow and adherence to policies and procedures:

  • Assists in coordinating circulation and interlibrary loan work processes to maintain detailed, accurate, and timely user records, including item holds, library fines, patron notifications, and fine collection.

  • Assists in enforcing regulations and policies concerning the use of library materials and spaces fairly and professionally.

  • Ensures services are provided for users to request materials not readily available in the Rickett Library through the use of interlibrary loan, document delivery, and/or document suppliers.

  • Ensures the availability of essential curriculum materials in the course reserve collection and other items as deemed appropriate while following copyright compliance guidelines.

  • Assists in supervising students assigned to maintain the book stacks and re-shelve library materials including but not limited to inventory, preservation, and student worker training and guidance

  • Assists in the collection of statistics relevant to the department, including gate counts, project logs, and usage statistics.

  • Participates in the operation of library services during occasional evening and weekend hours.

Education and Experience:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or international equivalent required

  • 1 - 3 years of experience in college or university libraries preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

  • Knowledge of library operations, systems, and services.

  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, presentation, and research skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Capable of handling multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions required.

  • Ability to work independently, as a team member, and as a team leader.

Salary:

Commensurate with experience

Salary is commensurate with experience and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
