Job Description

Sr. Director, Leadership Communications – HR

The Sr. Director, Leadership Communications – HR is a consummate communications professional, whose perspective is highly regarded within and outside of Public Affairs. The person who is most successful in the role is highly collaborative, learns quickly, is exceptionally curious, adapts easily to change, pushes through ambiguity, and leverages an extensive network to connect dots, understand the big picture and help leaders all over the company advance their strategic priorities. They’re also an exceptional writer with extensive experience writing for others.

The person in this role will provide external and internal communications strategy guidance and support for Gilead’s EVP of Human Resources. In close collaboration with the Executive Director, Leadership Communications, the rest of the Leadership Communications team and cross functional partners, this person will create and executive a long-term messaging and engagement strategy for Gilead’s HR leader, inclusive of internal and external communications. This person will also contribute inspiring, engaging, interesting and relevant content for Gilead channels to demonstrate the company’s commitment to improving human health.

This role reports to the Executive Director, Leadership Communications.

Essential Duties and Job Functions

  • Lead and execute on a communications strategy for Gilead’s EVP of Human Resources, including external speaking opportunities, long-form content, social media, town halls, all-employee meetings, emails, social media, etc.

  • Further build Gilead’s profile as a pioneer in human health by positioning the Head of HR at relevant external events, where she can raise awareness of the company’s transformative work

  • Develop a deep, intuitive understanding of Gilead’s business, especially the HR organization, to provide the best possible strategic counsel to leaders, and to anticipate their communications needs

  • As a member of the Corporate & Internal Communications team, surface interesting stories that support our company narrative and build engagement and passion for Gilead in our employees and external audiences

  • Consistently stay aware of current and relevant trends in communications, such as person-first and anti-racist language

  • Together with the team, constantly push for new ideas, better platforms, new ways of connecting with employees; understanding what’s coming next, bringing these ideas to Gilead and interpreting them in a way that works for our audiences

  • Together with the Executive Director, Leadership Communications, support the EVP of HR with internal and external speaking opportunities, including content creation, prep, and feedback

  • Work closely with the employee engagement team to help leaders build morale and engagement and stay connected with their teams

  • Build and maintain networks within Public Affairs, in the HR organization, and in other functions to better understand the needs and sentiment of the employee population

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Enterprise thinker, working cross-functionally and through extensive personal networks to connect dots across the company

  • Self-starter; instinctual knack for overcoming obstacles and roadblocks to get things done

  • Expert written communications skills, passion for telling stories well

  • High EQ; ability to anticipate the needs of leaders, to stay ahead of trends in the business

  • Curiosity for continually learning new skills and knowledge, even when their application to the work at hand is not always immediately clear

  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communications skills

  • Innate executive presence, ability and ease working with senior leaders

  • Exceptional track record in employee communications and engagement

  • A knack for navigating ambiguity and making decisions with incomplete information

  • Skill for managing multiple, high-urgency projects simultaneously; flexibility is essential

  • Strong project management capabilities

  • Understanding of regulations and principles specific to communications for a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • BS or BA degree and minimum 14 years in related field such as public affairs, communications, health care policy, public policy, or related field preferred

The salary range for this position is: $237,660.00 - $307,560.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
