Area Lead Eastern Biology Department Ecologist

POWER Engineers’ Environmental Division is seeking a highly motivated and experienced natural resources consultant to support the Eastern Biology Department as an Area Lead. The position reports to our Foxborough, MA office, but can be completed via a hybrid workstyle, a combination of office and home.

The Area Lead position has a dual role: First, the successful candidate will possess excellent ecological technical skills and have a portfolio of successfully permitted projects in the energy, utility, or water resources markets. Second, the Area Lead will manage a group of personnel within the department. The Area Lead position requires technical and corporate knowledge, as well as management and leadership skills. The Area lead will have a proven ability to recruit, mentor, and lead technical staff.

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate willprovide task management of full-scale infrastructure projects focused on natural resources studies and federal, state, and local permitting in the Northeast. This begins with environmental scoping and budgeting efforts, then assisting our clients with the development and implementation of successful survey and natural resource permitting strategies.Occasionally, this leader will complete wetland delineations, ecological field assessments and compliance monitoring, especially to support the training and mentorship of staff.

The Area Lead will supervise biologists, environmental specialists, and environmental inspectors while reporting directly to the Eastern Biology Department Manager.

Area Lead responsibilities include:

  • Approving timecards and expenses

  • Establishing goals and objectives for direct reports with input from the Department Manager

  • Performing reviews of direct reports with input from the Department Manager

  • Support the Department Manager in the execution of the department annual business plan

  • Assisting in the organization and workload distribution of personnel

  • Managing personnel to meet project, department and individual objectives

  • Participating in and leading staff or technical meetings

  • Identifying areas and methods for process improvement within their group and the department as a whole

  • Performing quality control reviews for projects and personnel

  • Collaborating with other Area Leads

  • Providing training and mentoring for personnel

  • Understanding project risks, company risk polices, and how to mitigate risks

  • Lead safety efforts for the team and ensure the team follows safety rules and guidelines

  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills and the ability to lead by example

Required Education/Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in environmental/biological consulting in the utility or energy industry with transmission, renewables, power generation, natural gas or water resources projects

  • Knowledge of the 1987 Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineations Manual, appropriate regional supplements, and the Massachusetts Handbook for Delineation of Bordering Vegetated Wetlands

  • Understanding of Clean Water Act Section 404/401 permitting and Endangered Species Act regulations

  • Familiarity with the Massachusetts Wetland Protection Act, Rhode Island Freshwater Wetland, or Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council rules and regulations

  • Experience managing staff, projecting workloads, scheduling work, and fostering staff’s individual career development

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and commitment to quality and professionalism

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Substantial knowledge and hands-on experience with Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act regulations in the Northeast U.S.

  • Successful development and approval of Northeast state and federal permit applications.

  • B.S. and/or M.S. in Biology, Ecology, or related field

  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the region with potential travel throughout the U.S. Up to 15% travel is expected.
