Description of Work

Position will function as a Transportation Worker II in the East Wake County Maintenance Unit located in Bunn, NC. This position will report to the Franklin County Maintenance office but will perform work in Wake County. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, hurricane cleanup and other emergencies as they occur. Position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, forklift, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. The selected applicant will perform flagging operation to safely guide traffic through work zones and perform manual labor for extended periods of time. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc., and emergency response, which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back. Employee will be subject to outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. May perform variety of other assigned duties. Safety toe shoes required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and experience in installation of traffic control

  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching

  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations

  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, crack sealing machine, track excavator, skid steer or sweeper

Additional Expectations:

Working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Employee must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Employees at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the specialist level for a small percentage of time. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Employee must have the ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
