About You and This Role:

The NA Technical Service and Development (TS&D) group has an exciting opportunity for a P&SP Technician located at Pack Studios in Freeport, Texas supporting the Performance Plastics – Specialty Packaging business. In this role you will be expected to safely achieve project goals using technical, role-specific skills and experience. This may also include the need to introduce new procedures for new instrument methods, equipment changes, or new equipment. Your key responsibilities will include preparing samples from existing or developmental new materials, and fabricating samples for further testing.

Responsibilities:

  • Own and operate semi-commercial scale cast film equipment.

  • Handles laboratory tasks including methods and procedures and recommends variations in problem solving approach with little or no supervision.

  • Independently develops and implements experimental plans and acts responsible for a wide variety of laboratory tasks.

  • Holds essential know-how on safe operation of experimentation and on equipment ownership and implements these to Dow standard.

  • Accountable for the operation, maintenance and calibration of plastic processing and fabrication equipment.

  • Understand study prioritization and queue management.

  • Works with leadership and broader team to ensure requests are appropriately prioritized, completed and reported.

  • Complies to all relevant EH&S requirements, and intervenes with others, as appropriate.

  • Ensures appropriate ISO compliance across areas of responsibility.

  • Maintains request database for equipment to ensure accurate queries/reports.

  • Ensures all changes to materials or work procedures are reviewed, and MOC’d as needed.

  • Uses knowledge of the relevant technology consisting of product, test method, and testing equipment to quickly screen alternative approaches and recommends and implements variations in approaches.

  • Understands the group objectives and the business or group's value creating strategy and is an important contributor to the technical solutions that result in project and team success.

  • Trains other work group members and contractors on specific work processes, equipment, and machinery.

  • Prepares for and independently performs standard and some non-routine procedures using relevant equipment and instruments, for which activities may include sample or materials preparations, equipment setup and/or configurations, and proper handling and disposal of waste materials that may be generated from experimental activities.

  • Accurately and reliably records readings and observations using relevant equipment and instruments.

  • Appropriately handles and manages RCRA waste and disposal.

  • Defines and implements new testing methods for development purposes which may require creating unique configurations of existing equipment or development/fabrication of new equipment and systems.

  • Identifies the need for and is involved in implementing new processes, procedures, or technology to improve performance of work group.

  • Willingness to learn new fabrication technologies and/or testing methods supporting other Market Segments in the future.

  • Ability to work with a diverse set of technologists, contactors, subject matter experts, and asset focal points.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of an Associate's degree in a science related discipline/Military Degree Equivalency (MDE) and 1 year of relevant work experience or high school diploma/GED and 3 years of relevant work experience.

  • Must have experience writing procedures.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel, and ability to learn new systems quickly.

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • General electrical/mechanical troubleshooting skills

  • Knowledge of Dow MOC process

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Prior laboratory experience is preferred.

  • Prior experience operating cast film extrusion line is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Must be willing and able to do the following with or without a reasonable accommodation

  • Wear safety equipment, such as earplugs, goggles, and steel-toed shoes.

  • Wear and use respirators.

  • Perform frequent bending, reaching, and lifting.

  • Stand or walk for extended periods of time.

Additional Note:

  • This position does not provide relocation assistance.

  • Provides basic technical support to Lead Scientists and Technologist Leaders in the preparation and execution of experimental activities and studies. Provides technical support for product development, application development, technical service, and/or product or process research.
