As an intern you will participate in our nationwide Internship & Co-Op Program, LEAP, where you will have the opportunity to Learn, Engage, Apply, and Progress within the company. This Internship is for May - August 2025, but earlier start dates may be accommodated. In this position, you will be supporting the Combat Mission Systems (CMS) Business out of either the Sterling Heights, MI or Minneapolis, MN office.

BAE Systems is a leader in the defense industry, and currently has a need for Systems Engineering interns. Systems Engineering Interns work in multi-disciplinary team environment performing systems engineering tasks for military vehicle and weapons systems development programs. This internship may be with any one of the following Systems Engineering teams:

  • Core Systems Engineering (Requirements & Architecture)

  • Product Safety

  • System Design Integration

  • Reliability/Diagnostics

  • Maintainability

  • Engineering Processes, Planning & Control

Specific responsibilities associated with this position will include one or more of the following:

  • Collaborate with other program engineers to create, maintain, and modify system models and databases

  • Support trade studies to drive balanced design solutions and select from component alternatives

  • Determine where opportunities exist to improve the system design and recommend changes to the design based on analysis performed

  • Support technical specification development, at component, subsystem, and system levels, by analyzing and interpreting product performance specifications to ensure appropriate requirement flow down, allocation, and traceability

  • Aid in Size, Weight, Power, Cooling and Cost (SWaP-CC) analysis for vehicle platforms

  • Assist in the definition, documentation, and management of interfaces between assigned sub-system and components (i.e. thermal, signal, data, mechanical)

  • Identify assembly issues and risks and provide suggested producibility solutions to satisfy project technical, performance, cost, and schedule requirements

  • Perform maintenance task analysis, defining maintenance task steps, equipment, tools, times and personnel requirements. (Experience with relational databases is desired

  • Work on engineering improvement activities including process updates, data analysis and metrics

  • Perform analyses and review system design to ensure a robust, highly reliable design for maximizing system performance and capabilities.

  • Develop diagnostics and troubleshooting strategies, analysis, and testing to efficiently identify and isolate failed items.

  • Perform safety analyses, work with design teams to mitigate hazards, assess risk, and document results.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree program pursing a degree in Systems Engineering or other closely related field of study (i.e. Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) NON-IT RELATED

  • Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary team environment

  • Systems thinking skills (i.e., ability to work at detailed level but understand system level implications)

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to write technical reports and presentations

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Completed junior year of Bachelor s Degree program at the time of the summer internship

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a Master s degree in Systems Engineering, or other closely related field of study

  • Detailed cover letter is a plus

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in multi-disciplinary team environment

  • Previous internship with defense or automotive industry

  • Experience with military vehicle or weapons systems is preferred

  • Model based systems engineering experience, such as UML, SysML, Rational Harmony, Object-Oriented Systems Engineering Method (OOSEM)

  • Database experience such as DOORS, Microsoft Access

  • Proficient with Creo Parametric/Pro-E software or similar 3D modeling tool

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $48620 - $65670

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.

Temporary employees generally are not eligible for BAE Systems benefits, but can elect to participate in the 401(k) savings plan. Temporary employees working 20 hours per week are eligible for medical benefits, the employee assistance program, and business travel accident insurance.
