City of Fridley Firefighter - Fire Inspector in Fridley, Minnesota

Job Summary: Performs fire and safety inspections of commercial buildings, multifamily occupancies, care facilities, and conducts life safety outreach to Fridley businesses and residents. Scope of Responsibility: Responsible for performing fire and safety inspections, identifying and mitigating violations, and performing customer service and public education to ensure compliance with Minnesota State Fire Code and City ordinances. Responds to emergency fire, safety and medical calls for service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Conducts initial and follow-up inspections of commercial and multifamily properties, care facilities, documents inspections and maintains database. 2. Responds to inquiries regarding fire code and City ordinances via telephone, email and in person. 3. Conducts inspections and witnesses performance testing of new fire protection systems. 4. Assists with fire investigation of commercial fire scenes using a systematic approach and scientific method to determine the cause and origin of fires as directed. 5. Assists with planning and delivery of public educational programs and events. 6. Conducts research and prepares recommendations regarding fire code, NFPA guidelines, city ordinances, fire equipment, etc. 7. Creates and maintains database of building pre-fire/emergency planning documents for Fire Department response. 8. Assists in the fire code enforcement program and case management process by taking complaints, conducting field inspections, meeting with property owners to assure compliance, entering data into the data base/information system, issuing notifications and citations, documenting and monitoring compliance schedules, coordinating work with other departments, supervising abatements, and testifying in court. 9. Coordinates activities with other departments. 10. Interprets and explains the requirements of the law, provides guidance and education to the public, property owners, internal staff and outside agencies regarding codes and ordinances. 11. Develops and maintains a variety of records and reports. 12. Responds to emergency incidents and alarms and serves in a supervisory role at the scene until relieved by a superior officer. 13. Conducts post fire investigations to determine cause and origin of fires and prepares fire investigation reports. 14. Assists with maintenance, cleaning and setup of vehicles, equipment and facilities including maintenance of CAD mobile devices in vehicles. 15. Maintains and installs residential lockboxes. 16. Represents the Fire department at local, regional, state and national fire service meetings, conferences and schools. 17. Attends conferences, seminars, workshops and meetings to maintain current information on fire service methods, techniques and administration. 18. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
