POSITION SUMMARY:

The National Institutes of Health is seeking a skilled Biologist to join our team and contribute to the development and optimization of downstream processes for recombinant proteins, virus vaccines, virus-like particles (VLPs), and nucleic acids intended for clinical use. The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related discipline, coupled with 2-5 years of experience in GMP clinical-phase product purification, including hands-on experience with mRNA and pDNA. This role involves designing and optimizing chromatography and filtration processes, performing mRNA purification and IVT, and supporting technology transfer to manufacturing facilities. The successful candidate will be adept at working with automated bioprocessing systems, analyzing data, and participating in multidisciplinary teams to support process development and implementation.

TASKS. The contractor shall:

  • Develop and optimize downstream purification processes for clinical trial candidates, including recombinant proteins and nucleic acids.

  • Design and perform chromatography and filtration operations within the purification group.

  • Purify research-phase biomolecules to support internal and external collaborative efforts.

  • Conduct In vitro Transcription (IVT) and scale mRNA purification processes.

  • Prepare materials such as buffers and packed columns for downstream processing activities.

  • Facilitate technology transfer of developed processes to pilot plants for clinical manufacturing.

  • Write, review, and maintain technical protocols, reports, and documentation.

  • Present data and findings at group and departmental meetings.

  • Implement high-throughput purification processes using platforms like TECAN and Sartorius.

  • Generate analytical data using techniques such as SDS-PAGE and UV/Vis/Fluorimetry.

  • Develop custom data analysis and modeling tools using programming languages like Python, Matlab, or Perl.

  • Assist in developing and implementing digital informatics systems for the purification department.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related field.

  • 2-5 years of experience in recombinant protein, pDNA, and mRNA purification for GMP clinical-phase products.

  • Proficient with In vitro Transcription and mRNA purification processes.

  • Experienced in operating high-throughput bioprocessing systems such as TECAN.

  • Ability to maintain accurate, detailed records and manage data.

  • Strong team player with effective cross-functional collaboration skills.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Familiar with software for data analysis and word processing.
