DAWSON COUNTY ADULT DETENTION/CORRECTION FACILITY Correctional Officer in GLENDIVE, Montana

Description of Work Unit

Dawson County Correction Facility is a multi-classification correctional and detention institution for adult misdemeanor and felony offenders. The institute is a multi-jurisdictional facility as it houses Montana State Prisoners and County Prisoners from Dawson County and adjoining counties. The institution is operated for the incarceration, treatment, and rehabilitation of the inmate population for the State of Montana and the County of Dawson.

Description of Position:

Completes, but not limited to, the following duties: booking forms, taking fingerprints, identification photographs, completes other detention records such as medical information, dispositions and court records, searches of prisoners, maintains constant supervision and surveillance over prisoners and visitors, hand out commissary for prisoners, responsible for prisoner's property and property inventory records, and supervises the inmate laborers (trustees). Correctional Officers are responsible for a wide variety of security duties relative to the safe, orderly and cost effective operation of Dawson County Correction Facility. Also acts as security officer for the jail and performs related duties as required by the Sheriff or Facility Administrator.

Job Requirements

Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Work is performed in all areas of Dawson County Correction Facility and includes regular contact with inmates who may be abusive or assaultive. Risk of injury is such that unusual awareness must be employed along with special safety precautions in movements through the facility. Physical demands upon officers can be great. These demands include climbing up and down stairs in housing units. Officers must be in good physical condition and be able to respond in the event of an emergency. Must be able to drive a vehicle and posses a current Montana Drivers License. Must supply the facility shift supervisors with a personal phone number and this personal phone number must be updated whenever the number is changed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of security practices and equipment, methods and techniques, are required in order to accomplish all duties. Additional requirements include interpersonal skills in dealing with all kinds of people, knowledge of laws pertaining to inmate rights, due process, and access to medical services. General office and record keeping procedures, law enforcement communication procedures, and computer terminals. Must be able to establish effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, inmates and the general public. Be physically able to frequently climb stairs, lift heavy objects, follow verbal and written instructions, operate law enforcement communication system, learn security and rehabilitative principles and techniques, learn and follow the Facility policy and procedures. Be able to enforce the necessary amount of force that is reasonable and necessary to gain control of a situation. The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a high school diploma or GED and / or related work experience.

Minimum Qualifications

All applicants for the position of Correctional Officer shall meet the following basic qualifications:

Meet all physical, mental, and character requirements established or may be established by the Facility.

Have a High School Diploma / GED or HISET Equivalent. If hired, you will be required to submit a copy of your High School Diploma, GED or HiSET equivalent.

Is not addicted to the use of intoxication liquors or narcotics or habit-forming drugs. Pre-employment drug testing is required..

Have not been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor crime, involving moral turpitude, or detrimental to the public service nor a habitual law violator.

Shall be able-bodied and able to speak the English language understandably and write said language legibly.

Be an American citizen of impeccable loyalt to the United States of America.

One who has not attempted or made material false representation, deception or fraud in connection with the filing of his/her application.

Full Time Position / 12 Hour Shifts, either days or nights. Schedule will be 3 days on, 3 days off: 4 days on, 4 days off. Shifts are bid every six months.

Starting $21.59 per hour. Dawson County also offers our officers after two years employment with completion of the MLEA and being certified by POST, a onetime $2,000.00 Longevity payment. Benefit package is equivalent to $8.90 per hour for a total compensation package of $30.49 per hour. Benefits include a 20-year retirement system, health insurance, life insurance, optional vision / dental insurance, vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays. Additional optional benefits: flex plan, health savings account, AFLAC and Colonial insurance plans, Nationwide retirement 457 B plan.
