The Role
The Labor Relations Director, reporting to the Vice President, Human Resources, will be responsible for the implementation and maintenance of a productive and effective labor relations program, which promotes long and short-term labor relations strategies. The Labor Relations Director will serve as a critical subject matter expert in areas of negotiations, labor contract administration, advice and counseling to key business stakeholders, grievance/arbitration management, and will possess strong knowledge of issues arising under the NLRA. Effective strategic planning and execution are critical to the success of this front-facing role. The Labor Relations Director works closely with the Labor Relations team, HR People Strategists, HR Centers of Excellence, as well as a wide range of operations leaders covering 7,000 union-represented employees.
The Main Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
Serve as bargaining agent in dealings with regional union leadership
Partner with and leads senior business unit leadership to strategically drive operational initiatives
Handletraditional labor questions/issues, interpretation of complex terms, policies or rules when escalated
Assist with the development and management of policies and procedures regarding labor issues
Provide strategic direction and manage precedent setting issues or cases that come up that could have a significant impact to the business and operations
Develop forward-looking strategies for the efficient administration of the grievance and arbitration process
What We Look For in a Candidate
Bachelor’s degree required and MBA, Master’s in Labor Relations, or Juris Doctorate strongly preferred
8-10 years of substantive traditional labor experience or equivalent industry experience
Knowledge of business operations with the ability to identify and act on long-term objectives and goals
Superior writing and contract development skills required
Ability to diplomatically deal with external groups and unions
Ability to partner with management/various levels of leadership to determine the business needs and ensure that these needs are enabled through the labor/management relationship
Experience partnering with counsel to strategize, prepare, and try arbitrations/NLRB matters
Superior interpersonal, influencing, and negotiation skills
Ability to maintain productive working relationships with union leadership
Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and demonstrate flexibility
Excellent analytical and organizational skills
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in a clear, concise, organized manner
Must work independently but excel at collaborating in a team environment
Travel requirement – less than 10%
