We are currently hiring an Underground Soft Rock Mining Supervisor to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario.
Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products.
Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.
How will you contribute to the team?
Following the mine plan, the Mining Supervisor is accountable for the safe, efficient and quality of work performed by the assigned mining crew. The Supervisor must be capable of modifying the shift's plan as required and ensuring the maximization of resources.
Essential Job Functions: Include but are not limited to the following:
Ensure that their crew members know and follow the company’s policies, procedures and standards for work and safety, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants.
Set and achieve production targets in accordance with the company’s stated goals and objectives.
Direct Processing, Services, Ground Control, Production and Development personnel and equipment to maximize their performance and production. This includes the assignment of equipment and the supervision of its use and working condition.
Maintain an accurate shift log for the purpose of communicating reliable production and safety information, as required. The log will include explanation for the variances from target.
Perform weekly and monthly safety audits as well as promote and monitor the use of Safety Systems and Tools.
Liaise with maintenance, engineering, logistics and other departments
Comply and execute their responsibilities in adherence to the Collective Agreement including fair and just discipline consistent with company policies and manage Stage 1 grievances.
Ensure Mine Rescue personnel are made available for training, as scheduled.
Complete pre-shift and post-shift communication to relay critical information to the relieving supervisor.
On a daily basis, the Mining Supervisor will:
Perform cross shift communication to relief supervisor in order to relay critical operation information
Follow company procedures for “due diligence.”
Utilize the techniques of the “Five-point safety system.”
Read and sign the Shift Log.
Make routine checks of the refuge stations, explosive storage and fire suppression equipment.
Complete scheduled Safety Audits.
Verify equipment pre-operation inspections.
Verify that proper tagging and lockout procedures are being followed, as required.
Verify the accuracy and appropriateness of all work orders.
Identify and examine all new or unusual working conditions for safety.
Involve workers in making decisions concerning best and safest work practices.
Verify the preparation, accuracy and delivery of time-worked records.
Ensure required supplies, tools and appropriate safety equipment are on hand and delivered to the correct work site.
Follow company procedures for reporting mechanical or electrical malfunctions and ordering appropriate maintenance support.
Ensure that non-routine tasks are identified and safe procedures developed and communicated to all involved employees prior to the start of the operation.
As required, the Mining Supervisor will:
Attend safety, production planning meetings.
Accept responsibility for other assigned tasks.
Investigate all accidents, incidents and occurrences and complete reports immediately.
Advise all workers of actual or potential risks to his/her health or safety.
Take every reasonable action to ensure the health and safety of all workers.
Recommend training programs for direct-reporting staff and workers.
Conduct probationary employee performance appraisals.
Encourage worker input into production, best working practices and health and safety improvements.
Track, analyze and report all variances to operations with appropriate action plans to the Superintendent.
Qualifications
what should you bring to the role?
- Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience and a minimum of 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
Preferred:
Mining Common Core and a minimum of 2 years mining experience required
5 years of supervisory experience in a mining, engineering or similar environment required
Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Experience with Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants
Supervisory Soft Rock Common Core
Proficient knowledge of MS Office and requires good computer skills

what is the work schedule?
This is a rotating continental schedule. You will be required to work both day and night shifts.
This position is expected to work underground.
If you do not live nearby, you will be required to relocate. A relocation assistance program is available to those that qualify.
