The Opportunity

The Colorado School of Mines Department of Geology & Geological Engineering/Hydrologic Science and Engineering Program is encouraging applications for a Research Associate to fill a one-year position as part of Department of Energy award, with potential extension for a second year. Functioning independently, the Research Associate will design, organize and conduct highly specialized and advanced experiments in hydrogeophysics using established scientific protocols and procedures; summarize findings and publish results in research journals; assume general responsibility for scientific operations in the field; and provide supervision and guidance to junior technicians, students, and researchers. Specifically, the Research Associate will be working with a team of scientists across multiple institutions (specifically Oregon State University, the University of Colorado-Boulder, Colorado School of Mines, the Pennsylvania State University, and the Pacific Northwest National Lab) as part of this grant. The Research Associate is expected to lead geophysical data collection, specifically electrical resistivity and self potential, on the control of subsurface variability on tree water use at multiple sites. Primary Duties

Lead installation and analysis of geophysical data (specifically electrical resistivity and self potential), including design and implementation of research protocols; designing safety procedures; and adapting new procedures, methods or instrumentation relative to research procedures.

Analysis of sapflow and soil moisture sensing

Collect, prepare, and analyze research data;maintain and publish research data; tabulate and display data for presentation in research conferences and for manuscript preparation.

Use graphical and statistical software and numerical models to analyze and present data.

Search pertinent scientific literature as needed.

Publish results of data in the peer-reviewed literature.

Be an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Other duties as assigned to meet the objectives goals of the program and/or Mines.

Physical Requirements:

Field work is expected as part of this job, which may require lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs for short distances and hiking up to 5 miles at a time with a loaded backpack.

Minimum Qualifications: Minimal Level of Education and Experience:

Two years postdoc experience in hydrology and/or geophysics

Previous field experience in hydrogeophysics, specifically self potential, required

Strong interest in multidisciplinary science and working in teams

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and Other Attributes (KSAOs):

Strong interests in mentoring and/or working with students

Salary Rate and Benefits $67,600
