Google Readout Hardware Research Scientist, Quantum AI in Goleta, California

Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 2 years of experience in leading a research agenda.

  • Experience with microwave engineering, circuit design, EM simulation, or test-and-measurement equipment and practices.

  • Experience with a programming language (e.g., Python, C, MATLAB, etc.).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with parametric amplifier design and test.

  • Experience with filter design and impedance matching techniques, with the ability to innovate in this area.

  • Experience with EM simulation tools and techniques (e.g., HFSS, Sonnet, ADS, etc.).

  • Experience with PCB and IC design tools.

  • Lab experience and the ability to debug hardware and software issues, in the context of microwave control and measurement of superconductor or semiconductor quantum systems.

As a Research Scientist, you'll setup large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly, managing deadlines and deliverables while applying the latest theories to develop new and improved products, processes, or technologies. From creating experiments and prototyping implementations to designing new architectures, our research scientists work on real-world problems that span the breadth of computer science, such as machine (and deep) learning, data mining, natural language processing, hardware and software performance analysis, improving compilers for mobile platforms, as well as core search and much more.

As a Research Scientist, you'll also actively contribute to the wider research community by sharing and publishing your findings, with ideas inspired by internal projects as well as from collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes all over the world.

As a Readout Hardware Research Scientist, you will own and streamline the characterization and measurement of parametric amplifiers and other components in the readout subsystem. You will own experiments through a complete life-cycle, from design and simulation to deployment. You will work with research scientists and engineers to improve device and system performance, measurement infrastructure and procedures, and configuration tracking.

The full potential of quantum computing will be unlocked with a large-scale computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build this computer and unlock solutions to classically intractable problems. Our roadmap is focused on advancing the capabilities of quantum computing and enabling meaningful applications.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $161,000-$239,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.   • Work with research scientists and engineers to characterize processors, amplifiers, and components, and contribute to characterization software.

  • Work with mechanical and electrical engineers to improve both performance and scalability of the readout subsystem.

  • Own/operate/maintain/build-out measurement setups including dilution refrigerators, microwave and DC test platforms, filters, amplifiers, control electronics, etc.

  • Own experiments through a complete life-cycle, from design and simulation to deployment, synthesize data into actionable changes, and communicate results.
