Mesa County Paralegal II - Civil Division - County Attorney in Grand Junction, Colorado

At a proficient and independently-operating level, with minimal supervision, forms a legal conclusion based on research and document conclusions from research in the form of a legal research memo or incorporates conclusions of research into pleadings as appropriate. Prepares legal documents, including exhibit lists and witness lists, and assists attorneys as directed. Prepares jury instructions for all contested trials and/or hearings as directed by the attorney. All work is performed under the supervision of an attorney and/or supervisor, and at the request of the attorney and/or supervisor. Ensures that all responsibilities concerning the case status of assigned caseloads are completed from initial contact with citizens, professionals, and caseworkers through settlement or hearing. Ensures the proper filing of documents with the courts. Ensures legal jurisdiction over the parties is acquired in all cases by ensuring valid service of process is obtained or notice is published for all parties within statutory time frames. Knowledge of legal terminology and formatting of legal documents is required Lead CORA Requests Assisted by an attorney in gathering information and preparing responses to CORA requests. High Q administrator- Serves as one of the offices System Administrators for High Q computer program, helping ensure the system is up-to-date and managing its use effectively and supporting individual users as required and implementing county attorney directives. Board of Assessment Appeals Assists in draft pleadings, collecting and disclosing evidence and otherwise providing litigation support to the attorneys as needed including tracking case progression. Unemployment/EEOC/CCRD Cases draft settlement statement, exhibit list, response to request for information. Subpoena Duces Tecum draft Motions to Quash SDTs that are received by MCAO and other departments. Review provided documents to determine what may be released without court order. Provide the Court with whatever is necessary for an in-camera review. Copy and provide whatever documents the Court determines should be released. Specific to MH Caseload - Ensure that all responsibilities concerning the case status of the mental health caseload are completed from initial contact through termination/hearing. Ensure the proper filing of documents with the courts; utilize standard naming system for all computer documents in order to allow easy retrieval by other staff members; file paperwork in appropriate folders. Organize, create and maintain legal files and filing system. Communicate with attorneys and other parties/agencies to proceeding regarding status of cases and procedures of the court via telephone, written correspondence, and personal contact. JD Filings Ensure filings in the JD caseload are done in a timely fashion. Work with court clerks to ensure filings are accepted. Code Compliance-Manage all code compliance cases from initial contact through enforcement action, including supporting attorneys and tracking cases for management reporting. Utilizes standard naming system for all computer documents in order to allow easy retrieval by other staff members. Organizes, creates and maintains legal files and filing system, or assists in the organization, creation and maintenance of legal files and filing system. Drafts routine to complex pleadings and correspondence including but not limited to petitions, summonses, orders, stipulations, affidavits, subpoenas, routine to complex motions to the court citing appropriate case law, discovery requests and responses and jury instructions. Analyze the case file to draft an exhibit list and witness list, conducts interviews in preparation for trial when requested, organizes trial notebooks for attorney s use at trial, and finalizes appellate briefs, including proper citation of legal authority. Conducts research which may include review of legal reference material, case files, digests, pleadings and other legal documents. Utilizes online research tools, hard copy statutes and other resources as necessary to research routine to complex legal issues. Forms legal conclusions based on this research and documents conclusions from research in the form of a legal research memo or incorporates conclusions of research into pleadings as appropriate. Obtains information needed for drafting legal pleadings, and provide guidance and feedback on matters pertaining to caseload. Evaluates evidence and makes recommendations as to its use in court proceedings. Drafts forms as requested by attorney or supervisor to conform to statutory criteria. Works with Court personnel to set hearings and calculate deadlines. Performs other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Education and Experience: Paralegal certification program and six (6) years of experience in legal work. Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job. Licenses and Certifications: Certificate of completion from ABA approved paralegal program is required. Supplemental Information PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Work is generally confined to a standard office environment.
