SML North America (NA) is a part of SML and has about 1,000 employees across the United States, Canada and Mexico. We operate the Central Distribution Center in Byhalia, MS as well as Regional Distribution Centers across the NA region.

What you will do

The Manager, Regional Health & Safety is part of the Human Resources function within SML NA. This is both a strategic and hands-on role that has overall responsibility to lead the health & safety (H&S) strategy for the entire NA region, as well as leading specific H&S activities at the eight Regional Distribution Center (RDC) operations and the corporate SML location in Greensboro.

You will develop, implement and manage H&S programs and initiatives consistent with the organization’s business plans, and in compliance with federal, state, local and Volvo requirements; while at the same time providing leadership to the organization in H&S strategy and practices.

You will report to the Director, Human Resources and be located in Greensboro, NC. Up to 50% travel may be required in order to provide a high level of support to the operations.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure alignment of SML H&S activities across the NA region through establishment and coordination of the SML NA H&S network.

  • Actively lead H&S initiatives and the safety culture for the RDC’s and Greensboro.

  • Actively partner with business and operational leaders in order to fully understand their challenges and to develop an effective H&S strategy to support their objectives.

  • Establish operational H&S goals, monitor and communicate program effectiveness, and develop/manage improvement programs as necessary.

  • Develop programs to reduce risk for work-related illnesses and injuries aligned with operational requirements.

  • Monitor and comply with all current and future H&S regulatory requirements and perform regulatory impact evaluations and implementation planning. Ensure business and operational leaders are informed of all potential impacts and monitor performance against regulatory requirements and H&S objectives.

  • Advise and coach people leaders on H&S-related issues.

  • Develop and deliver H&S training to people leaders and other colleagues.

  • Define and report H&S targets and KPI’s. Monitor operational H&S performance, trends and activities. Communicate H&S performance data to leadership as requested.

  • Conduct or participate in H&S internal audits. Manage and report closure of identified findings.

  • Participate in global and local H&S networks and working groups, including the global SML H&S network and the US Volvo H&S network.

  • Ensure consistent utilization of internal cloud-based reporting tools (e.g. Cority) to track and report compliance documentation and safety findings as well as to develop dashboards. Provide training as necessary.

  • Develop and implement H&S process improvements within the network utilizing lean methodology.

  • Understand and administer collectively bargained H&S contract language. Maintain collaborative relationships with union safety and other representatives.

  • Environmental duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Lead and act according to Volvo values, drive change and promote diversity.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental Engineering or a related field required.

  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or other HS&E certifications (CIH, CHMM, etc…) a plus.

  • Minimum 5 years of Safety Management experience required, preferably working in a distribution/manufacturing/industrial environment.

  • Experience working within a unionized environment preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced team environment striving towards operational excellence guided by Volvo’s Values and the Code of Conduct.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • As all documentation is in English, proficiency in the English language is required

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Advanced knowledge of state and federal H&S laws and regulations

  • Advanced knowledge of recognized management system standards (ISO, OHSAS, etc…)

  • Working knowledge of regulatory H&S reporting requirements

  • Working knowledge of ergonomics principles

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to network effectively across a diverse organization and build enduring relationships across functional and geographical areas

  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to be flexible and change directions when needed

  • Ability to coach managers and employees in handling various safety-related issues

  • Ability to work independently and make independent decisions, ensuring high levels of collaboration with stakeholders and subject matter experts

  • Ability to work collaboratively with operational leadership and union officials at all levels within the organization

  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office 365)
