AVP, SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

The AVP, Software Engineering is charged with leading Middle and Large Commercial engineering function. The position requires a strong technical leader who can drive innovative solutions and architect well-designed systems. Responsibility includes but not limited to overseeing solution design and transforming the technology workforce into a software engineering culture capable of independent ownership and end to end delivery. The successful candidate must have the ability to influence across the technology organization, actively participate in strategic planning and decision making and the execution of complex technology initiatives and projects. He or she must have an ability to effectively communicate and influence a point of view and perspective with senior leaders. They will provide leadership to business and engineering team members through partnership and mentoring.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in Charlotte, NC or Hartford, CT 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship.

Job Duties:

  • Responsible for technology strategy, process improvement, software engineering mindset, risk mitigation, financial management, and resource planning.

  • Collaborates with enterprise-wide leaders to lead digital, cloud migration and underwriting transformation and Generative AI co-pilot initiatives for Middle and Large Commercial Organization

  • Evangelizes high-quality technology and software engineering practices.

  • Provides thought leadership and mentorship to engineering and operations professionals.

  • Establishes and matures Software Engineering practices using Agile SAFe framework, Platform and chapter concepts

  • Ensures talent development and succession planning.

  • Manages software engineering teams and recommends best practices.

  • Drives community engagement and developer productivity.

  • Accountable for software products and educates leaders on emerging technology trends.

  • Leads innovation and implement new technologies.

  • Demonstrates technical and business acumen.

  • Engages leaders to support technology changes.

  • Competent at a Distinguished software engineer level.

  • Trusted advisor to leadership teams.

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to influence decisions.

  • Promotes continuous improvements and stays informed about emerging trends

  • Provide thought leadership, direction and mentorship to division wide engineering and operations professionals on modern engineering driven software delivery practices.

  • Ensure high quality talent, bench strength and succession planning through best practices in recruiting, selection, training, developing, and retaining IT professional staff.

  • Actively collaborates with team members to drive outcomes across the line of business.

  • Technical and business acumen, awareness with technology trends to influence roadmaps in collaboration with architecture, strategy and delivery leadership teams.

Skills and Expertise:

  • 12 + years of experience in application software solution development along with managing software engineering teams.

  • Expert level knowledge of technology in Software Engineering domain

  • Deep technical knowledge across various integration points

  • Strong knowledge of various operating systems, databases and infrastructure technologies

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills are a must, as well as the ability to work effectively across internal and external organizations

  • Experienced with DevSecOps practices, micro services or API based integrations

  • Understanding and experience with AI, ML and integrating data science models real-time into operation systems as well as Cloud and Blockchain technologies

  • Practical experience in Insurance domain with a strong prior delivery experience is preferred

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or related field; Master of Science in Computer Science or related preferred

  • Ability to engage leaders across the organizational boundaries and influence technology decisions.

  • Ability to deal with, navigate through healthy conflict scenarios across the organizational boundaries.

  • Take ownership to support and promote continuous improvements across the organization.

  • Build technical expertise with emerging development tools and frameworks.

  • Market research on emerging trends for technology disruptors in the field. Information protection and secure development practices. Competent with most of the competencies at a Distinguished software engineer level.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$165,680 - $248,520
