Craven County Government Medical Lab Assistant III - Havelock (10830) in Havelock, North Carolina

Primary Purpose

The primary responsibility of the Medical Lab Assistant III is to work independently in the laboratory at the Craven County Community Health Center in Havelock and to produce timely, accurate, and reliable test results. This includes blood drawing on adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients using standard phlebotomy techniques and equipment.

Essential Functions

80% Phlebotomy

  • Perform blood draws on adult and pediatric patients that come into the lab for testing.
  • Techniques include venipuncture and capillary puncture using standard phlebotomy supplies and equipment.
  • All techniques must be performed abiding by OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen regulations.
  • Explain and reassure patients, and guardians if patient is pediatric, about the phlebotomy procedure.
  • Collect blood specimen in a timely manner and in the container appropriate for the test to be performed.
  • Process specimens in a timely manner and in the appropriate way for testing in house or for sending out to a reference lab. This must be in a manner which will preserve the integrity of the specimen.
  • Assure that all specimens and requisitions are labeled with all required information.
  • Use independent judgement to recognize abnormal and/or critical test values and make decisions regarding the need for retesting and/or confirmatory testing.
  • Record and reports test results based on policy and procedures.
  • Notifies Medical Lab Supervisor I and/or Medical Lab Technologist I of instrument or test malfunction, etc.; otherwise, responsible for final review of own work before releasing results.

10% General Lab Duties

  • Perform and monitor Quality Control on test systems and equipment as required. Review results and report accordingly.
  • Successfully participate in required competency evaluations.
  • Monitor inventory and expiration dates of supplies and reagents regularly and request necessary supplies in a timely manner.
  • Replace biohazard boxes in laboratory and clinic rooms as needed.
  • Monitor and record refrigerator temperatures as required.
  • Maintain weekly, monthly, and quarterly checklists for the phlebotomy room.
  • Decontaminate work surfaces and reusable supplies as necessary and dispose of biohazardous materials and sharps appropriately.
  • Answer questions from patients and other staff regarding lab policies and procedures, testing, etc.

10% Additional Support

  • Perform administrative tasks as assigned by the Havelock clinic provider. This includes preparing letters to be sent to patients with normal test results, scanning documents, assisting with quality improvement projects, etc.
  • Transport specimen, mail, supplies, etc. to the CCHD New Bern office at the end of the day.
  • Transport mail, supplies, lab supplies, etc. to CCCHC Havelock as needed.
  • Work in the New Bern lab as assigned by the supervisor.
  • In the event of a disaster, may be required to assist as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or management.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school or General Education Development diploma and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education or experience.
  • Valid Driver's License is required.
Additional Information

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of phlebotomy procedures, lab equipment, instrumentation, and terminology. Skill in the use of equipment and supplies and in the performance of procedures. Ability to make accurate observations and written reports of test results. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to instruct students and other health care professionals in procedures and instrumentation.
