Position Summary:
Performs assignments that are unique or will establish procedure. Applies proven technical methods to assignments. Supports project teams and works on projects under guidance of supervisor. Is involved with long-term thinking and planning for improvement. Applies experience and knowledge outside areas of expertise. Is a resource to the organization. May be assisted by lower-level technicians and have frequent contact with professionals and others in the establishment.
For the automation-focused position, the technician will play a vital role in troubleshooting and optimizing complex control systems for manufacturing and assembly processes. Responsibilities include contributing to the design and implementation of new equipment and automation initiatives, with a strong emphasis on diagnostics and comprehensive support during equipment installation and start-up phases.
The technician will manage and enhance technical automation software, ensuring seamless integration and operation within existing systems. Additionally, the role requires proactive problem-solving and a strategic approach to continuous improvement, fostering collaboration across teams to share insights and best practices.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities :
Recommend and/or creates new tests, systems and/or procedures.
Designs products, tools and fixtures (with engineers’ input) and/or makes modifications to existing products and completes or coordinates the completion of all necessary documentation.
Recommend and implement new technologies (hardware, software, equipment, product, processes)
Recommends and/or creates and executes plans for testing of concepts, design changes or product requirements based on expected results only. Plans will require moderate engineering review.
Analyzes or interprets design or process changes in a complex manner (e.g. DOE, complex tolerance stack-ups design calculations, DFMEA, PFMEA)
Recommends and/or conducts tests requiring selection and adaptation or modification of a wide variety of critical test equipment and test procedures.
May justify and procure capital equipment.
Troubleshoot complex equipment or product malfunctions.
Interacts with others within and external to Swagelok in an advanced manner.
Makes significant contribution to the training of technicians, engineering co-ops or entry-level engineers. Independently assist other technicians. May check the routine work of other technicians.
Responsible for the guidance and completion of project work with moderate supervision.
The automation-focused role is responsible for the following:
Developing innovative automated system solutions, incorporating all aspects of the electrical, controls, robotic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
Collaborates with cross-functional teams to design, program, and optimize PLCs, robots, and vision systems, integrating automation solutions into complex manufacturing processes.
Proactively modifies, reverse engineers, and troubleshoots existing systems, implementing enhancements that improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.
Synthesizes input from product and processes to create documentation of system requirements, including design, installation, and testing for new automated equipment and systems.
Drives continuous improvement efforts by analyzing system performance and implementing data-driven solutions to optimize automation processes.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
Required:
2-year associate’s degree in related field (mechanical engineering technology, CAD or other technical fields) or equivalent work experience
5+ years of experience in related field
Expertise in chosen technical field
Proficient user of moderately complex technical tools
Demonstrates ability to complete major and complex assignments or parts of larger assignments
Advanced problem solving and decision-making abilities
Good oral and excellent written communication
Demonstrates proficient communication, programming and trouble shooting skills
Strong abilities to use moderately complex technical tools and lab equipment and instrumentation (Equipment may vary based on department)
Good computer and typical office software skills
