BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The M SI DER PROGRAMS SIA & CBRE Department of the M CUSTOMER ENERGY RESOURCES PROGRAMS Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

JOB FUNCTION:

Serves as the Program Manager for the Smart DER Program, Standard Interconnection Agreement (SIA) and Community-Based Renewable Energy (CBRE) programs. Plans, organizes, develops, and provides overall management of programs as they evolve in response to public, regulatory, and the Company's business and strategic drivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans, organizes, and manages all program processes and tasks associated with the development of the Smart DER, SIA and CBRE programs in an evolving public, regulatory and Company business strategic environment.

  • Provides leadership and work direction and secures commitment from team members in meeting milestones and program goals.

  • Develops necessary strategies required to meet program goals. Makes early identification of potential problem areas and solves problems to ensure attainment of program objectives. Develops and maintains program schedules. Prepares and presents progress and cost and status reports internally and externally as required.

  • Administers contracts with consultants, contractors, vendors, and suppliers, etc., associated with the Smart DER, SIA and CBRE programs.

  • Supports the Division with interconnection reviews of other DER programs (e.g., Customer Grid-Supply Plus, Smart Export, Customer Self-Supply, Customer Grid-Supply, Net Energy Metering Plus).

  • Manages program budgeting, re-design, resource requirements and approval requests, procurement, implementation, monitoring/tracking, and financial accountability. Manages all program processes and tasks associated with the Smart DER, SIA and CBRE programs within the constraints of the programs' strategic objectives and budgets.

  • Works with internal and external stakeholders to plan, re-design, and implement program tariffs and related policies, practices, and procedures in response to public, regulatory, and the Company's business and strategic drivers.

  • Researches, evaluates, and recommends new technologies that can be applied as customer-sided solutions in achieving objectives. In the case of regulatory updates to tariffs, works with stakeholders to develop such revisions.

  • Prepares and provides reports, testimonies and presentations at internal strategic meetings, public meetings, and regulatory hearings as necessary.

  • Serves as the focal point for all program-related matters. Works with and through community groups, neighborhood boards, government agencies, the media, other utilities and private companies, the City Council, the State Legislature, and the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to disseminate information, address concerns, obtain approvals, and resolve program-related problems.

  • Works with others across the organization to obtain review and secure approvals for technical, regulatory and Tri-Company policy compliance.

  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    Knowledge Requirements

  • Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree (Bachelor of Science or Master of Science) from an ABET-accredited college or university is highly preferred. An additional degree in Business Administration (Finance, Accounting, Marketing major or Masters of Business Administration) is also preferred. Demonstrated relevant experience may be considered.

  • Working knowledge of power systems engineering, marketing, and pricing rate design principles and concepts, project management and coordination, usually acquired through college level courses or equivalent experience.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) and/or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification is desired.

  • Ability to perform detailed financial analysis using skills usually obtained through completion of Engineering Economics, Capital Investment courses or similar collegiate course work. Additional course work in Finance, Accounting and Marketing is desired.

  • Ability to perform independent research and work in a creative, innovative, and motivated fashion.

  • Detailed knowledge of personal computers and standard software applications such as Microsoft (MS) Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), MS Project and MS Visio is highly desired.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle confrontational, difficult and/or sensitive issues with professionalism. Ability to handle such issues while using tact, courtesy, respect, and discretion.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team leader in a matrix organization with team orientation.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously within budget and time constraints.

  • Demonstrated ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities and strategic direction. Ability to conceptualize new ideas quickly.

  • Must be a self-starter with a clear ability to research, plan, organize, execute, and report on work with little supervision.

  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license in order to travel to/from customer sites on a frequent basis. Must meet the standards for required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.

    Experience Requirements

  • Several (3-5) years of relevant experience in the field of electrical or mechanical engineering and developing and implementing business plans or projects.

  • Several (3-5) years of relevant experience in project or program management, preferably within the electric utility industry.

  • Working experience of a utility Distributed Energy Resources program.

  • Experience with regulatory, social, and public affairs processes.
