MD Anderson Cancer Center Laboratory Coordinator / Cancer Systems Imaging in Houston, Texas

SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Laboratory Coordinator is to assist in implementing general laboratory activities within the Department of Cancer Systems Imaging. The candidate must be able to perform multidisciplinary research to support small animal imaging studies and clinical imaging studies. The incumbent will provide technical management in laboratory operations as well as personnel support for the research laboratory. He/She will hire personnel and evaluate their performance, along with determining staffing needs and adequate coverage.
Shift / Hours: Monday - Friday / 8am - 5pm / 90% onsite
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Laboratory Technical Operations
Assess, evaluate and monitor all equipment in the imaging laboratory. Ensure appropriate lab compliance with MDACC and accrediting agency regulations. Review and make recommendations for purchasing based on anticipated workload. Interact with vendors, sales reps to obtain competitive pricing, quotes, as well as handling servicing of instrumentation. Responsible for outgoing shipping to core service providers, vendors and collaborators. Prepare information to assist with operating budgets. Review and make recommendations for purchasing based on anticipated workload. Recommend replacement or purchase of new equipment. Manage and maintain IACUC and IBC protocols for small animal imaging studies. Assist with the transfer of mice, materials, and instrumentation, and also assist with the management of Materials Transfer Agreements for imaging studies
Laboratory Personnel Supervision
Conduct interviews and select new employees. Counsel, train, and evaluate personnel. Assist in providing recommendations for employees merit increases, promotions and transfers when appropriate. Determine staffing needs and schedule personnel to provide adequate coverage. Coordinate laboratory educational activities. Plan and/or conduct in-service programs.
Imaging Experiments & Data
Learn and operationally launch new imaging technologies adopted by the facility and provide training to junior technologists and SAIF users on usage and safety of new and existing equipment. Modify and/or develop new techniques. Conduct laboratory research projects. Modify, develop and implement new techniques for biomedical imaging studies. Conduct imaging research projects, both independently and with collaborators. Perform veterinary procedures to prepare mouse models for imaging studies, and maintain mouse models during and after imaging sessions, including the use of aseptic techniques and veterinary monitoring procedures. Maintain and monitor imaging data archives, and also supervises and performs data transfer operations. Process and analyze imaging data. Provide clear, consistent, and organized recording of data and information to users to include faculty, staff and trainees. Long-term projects: Maintain appropriate level of effort and communication with all SAIF users; manage and coordinate activities to preserve experiment design and ensure that images, data, and quality of service are not compromised. Provide veterinary surgical support procedures, aseptic techniques, surgical facility preparation and setup, animal and instrument preparation, anesthetic induction, monitoring, and recovery procedures, and post-operative monitoring and care of animals, monitor vital signs and assess conditions of a variety of research animals using standard veterinary monitoring procedures. Provide veterinary technical assistance to include clinical, surgical, and imaging procedures to research animals, administer drugs via oral and parenteral (SQ, IM, IV) routes, placement of IV and catheters, positioning of animals for diagnostic and imaging procedures and obtaining biological data and samples (body temperature, pulse, rate, respiratory rate, samples of blood, urine, feces, etc.)
Maintenance, QC & Inventory
Ensure that laboratory is prepared for isotope inspection and safety accreditation. Responsible for the maintenance and operation of a variety of imaging equipment including radiographic, magnetic resonance, computed tomographic, gamma camera, positron emission tomographic, ultrasound, and optical imaging equipment. Maintain instrument used for quality control, inventory, arrange repairs and calibration, and arrangement shipment. Coordinate equipment service events with service contractors, and MDACC engineering team. Follow-up on service events to ensure/verify safety and proper imaging performance, perform equipment quality assurance tests after service is completed. Assist in the planning and coordination of space usage for multiple locations: Main Campus, SRB, and 3SCRB. Maintain and uphold the policies and procedures in accordance to safety guidelines for the operations of the facility.

Experience Required: Five years of administrative and supervisory experience in a large institution.
