DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The mission of the Fleet Management Department is to provide the City of Houston with the best value, fleet management services. To accomplish Fleet’s mission and our vision of being recognized as the best managed fleet in the country, we are actively seeking a Truck Driver (Wrecker Driver). The Truck Driver (Wrecker Driver) is a Tier 1 position and can make an immediate impact and add value towards the achievement of these goals. The purpose of the Truck Driver (Wrecker Driver) position is to drive safely while transporting personnel, vehicles, equipment, and other materials to and from worksites in a safe manner, according to safety procedures.

The Truck Driver (Wrecker Driver) duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Transport units to vendors for repairs and retrieve units once repairs have been completed.

  • Clean and service vehicles and equipment.

  • Organize and coordinate distribution of food, supplies and other materials as necessary.

  • May operate a variety of hand and power tools and heavy equipment, etc.

  • May transport materials and vehicles to various locations.

  • Provide emergency service to repair vehicles.

  • Communicate with a dispatcher, driving to the scene of an accident or breakdown.

  • Connect the vehicle to the tow truck and transport it back to the service station.

  • Responsible for unloading of towed vehicles. Attaching, strapping, securing the disabled vehicle to the tow truck of various sizes and equipment.

  • Service fleet maintenance wreckers to keep in working order.

  • Observe environmental and hazardous material procedures.

  • Attend driving and safety training programs.

  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, obtain, and maintain federally mandated security clearances where required.

There is routine exposure to significant levels of heat, cold moisture, air pollution, chemical gases, and substances. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns. The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling. No special knowledge of any subject area or technical field is required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Six months of experience driving a heavy commercial truck, or its equivalent are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Must have valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

PREFERENCES

Preference will be given to applicants who have experience as wrecker driver, transporting and operating heavy duty vehicles and equipment such as tractors, riding mowers, etc. Applicants with mechanical aptitude are desired.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
