Organization Overview

The Engineering Tech Center (ETC) is responsible for providing global technical expertise in the engineering sciences related to Process Engineering and secondary/tertiary loop disciplines. This includes knowledge and stewardship of the following: First Principles, Unit Operations, Equipment Flow Diagrams, Capability Calculations, Material & Energy Balances, Facilities (fitness for use), Root Cause applications, Equipment and Unit Operation Changes/Improvements including new technologies, Scale-ups, Periodic Reviews, Process Safety, Maintenance/Reliability, etc. This function has a global presence. This team provides engineering support to global manufacturing sites for the customer network, Global Facilities Delivery (GFD), development sites, as well as external manufacturing organizations and alliances.

The Associate Director position has overall responsibility for the supervision, performance, and development of ETC employees, the quality of the results, cGMP compliance and productivity improvement, discipline leadership and overall customer service. The ETC Associate Director oversees the area’s workload, customer communications, coordination with 3rd party technical support, technical issue resolution, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities:

The Associate Director has overall responsibility for the supervision, performance, and development of technical professionals engineering group, including the Engineering Laboratory.

Program Leadership (applies to any assigned programs):

  • Manage organizational change activities across networks and global manufacturing organizations

  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives and determine engineering functional response and engagement model

  • Own project and implementation plan for major engineering functional initiatives

  • Manage program deliverables by required dates

  • Document program strategy, key decisions, progress toward milestones, etc.

  • Establish a governance structure and administer the governance mechanisms for the program

  • Facilitate issue resolution, anticipate changes, and implement with quality speed and value

  • Apply a structured approach to project management, including project planning, schedule development, resource loading, and project governance

Engineering Laboratory Leadership:

  • Own all safety aspects of the B358 engineering laboratory

  • Ensure Compliance with Lilly Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP)

  • Champion Lean implementation and maintain the program

  • Work with Senior engineering lab owners to ensure capital investments are aligned with company priorities

  • Maintain staffing strategy to meet M&Q and development support needs

Administrative Leadership:

  • Lead the Performance Management process by overseeing the development of employee PM plans, coaching direct reports, providing feedback throughout the year, and completing the year-end processes including base pay adjustment and promotion decisions.

  • Meet or exceed operational targets by managing headcount, budget, and progress towards departmental goals.

  • Participate in talent assessment and succession planning activities

  • Actively recruit highly capable talent into the organization

  • Ensure personal and team compliance with all applicable policies and procedures

Evolve Capabilities:

  • Own the ongoing development of direct reports’ capabilities

  • Target project work for individual team members to develop specific capabilities

  • Ensure staff stays current in the latest developments in the industry and encourage impactful knowledge sharing through presentations, technical reports, and project delivery

  • Identify and sponsor (where appropriate) productivity improvement projects within and beyond Corporate Engineering

Customer Service:

  • Manage overall workload and resources to meet customer requirements

  • Ensure team members are consistently delivering technically sound work products

  • Maintain relationships with customers across the API network to ensure appropriate application of team resources to meet customer needs

  • Leverage personal network throughout manufacturing and development to influence business outcomes and to leverage skills within the team to provide business value

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering (e.g. ChE, ME, IE, BME)

  • 5+ years of experience in Process Engineering and/or related pharmaceutical manufacturing functional areas (e.g. Quality, TSMS, Plant Engineering, Operations)

  • Previous supervisory experience

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Demonstrated learning agility with engineering expertise in one or more disciplines

  • Outstanding communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior management

  • Knowledge of cGMP requirements, particularly as they apply to Process Engineering

  • Understanding and application of Quality Risk Management principles and tools

  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing tools (Green or Black Belt certifications are preferred)

  • Experience with Engineering Standards and Resource Assessments

  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities and strategies for the organization

Additional Information:

  • This position supports engineering globally and may require US and OUS travel (10-25%) as well as off-hour meetings due to time zone differences. This is not a remote position, and in-person presence is required.

  • This position requires the ability to access many different manufacturing sites. Varying PPE will be required.
