The Department of Health and Human Physiology at the University of Iowa invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Instruction or Associate Professor of Instruction position teaching undergraduate courses in the department, with a start date in August 2024. For consideration at the rank of Associate Professor of Instruction, candidates must have a doctoral degree and six or more years of relevant university teaching experience.

This is an instructional-track faculty position with opportunities for promotion (e.g., to Associate Professor or Professor of Instruction) if criteria are met. The position is renewable in one-year increments for the first three years, and renewable thereafter in three- or five-year increments (depending on rank). Applications are sought from candidates who have: 1) Demonstrated evidence of outstanding teaching in the following areas: human anatomy and/or human physiology, and other related courses within the candidate's expertise. 2) Excellent communication skills. Applicants must have a master's or PhD degree or equivalent in human anatomy, human physiology, kinesiology, exercise physiology, applied physiology, or a closely related field by the start date to be qualified for the position.

UNIVERSITY AND DEPARTMENT

The Department of Health and Human Physiology is a thriving program with multiple majors, minors, and focus areas. The department has shown significant growth over the past several years and is currently the largest department at the University of Iowa with 2200+ undergraduate students across six majors including Human Physiology, Exercise Science, Health Studies, Health Promotion, Sport and Recreation Management, and Therapeutic Recreation. To accommodate this growth, a new six-story, $249 million Health Science Academic Building that will house the Departments of Health and Human Physiology, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, and Communication Sciences and Disorders, is scheduled to be completed in 2026. This new building will become a hub for innovative teaching and learning, community outreach and engagement, experiential education, and cutting-edge biomedical, clinical, and community health-related research.

Education Requirement:

• Master's degree or PhD or equivalent in human anatomy, human physiology, kinesiology, exercise physiology, applied physiology, or related field completed prior to the start date.

Required Qualifications:

• Demonstrated effectiveness teaching as a primary instructor in human anatomy and/or human physiology, and other related courses within the candidate's expertise.
• Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

PhD in human anatomy, human physiology, kinesiology, exercise physiology, applied physiology, or related field is preferred.

Demonstrated effectiveness teaching in large enrollment courses at the university level.

Experience teaching in an online format.

Previous supervision of graduate teaching assistants or other instructors.

Potential for excellence in teaching biomechanics, and/or motor control at the university level.

Previous 'laboratory' teaching experience at the collegiate level in two or more of the following areas: human anatomy, human physiology, exercise physiology, exercise testing, biomechanics, or motor control.

Demonstrated experience with undergraduate course design and/or development and support of curricular innovation.
