Summary This position is organizationally aligned to the Engineering Service, Maintenance and Repair Section, at the Oscar G. Johnson VAMC Iron Mountain, MI (585), a Complexity Level 3 VHA Facility. The primary purpose of the position is to function as a Work Level over select FWS positions, and coordinate work and maintenance activities and to assist the Maintenance Supervisor. Responsibilities The duties of this position require being involved with the work of the maintenance crew as required and assisting the team with completion of their and reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor for guidance. Incumbent will lead a team of staff totaling up to 14 members ranging from WG-9 to WG-10 level. Trades involved within the team: Carpenters, Plumbers, Pipefitters, Electricians, Maintenance Mechanic HVAC, Equipment Mechanic, Masons and locksmiths. Work Leader duties include: Passing on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started, e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led. Working along with other workers and setting the pace. Demonstrating proper work methods. Seeing to it that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations. Obtaining needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work. Maintaining a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders). Checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Assuring that safety and housekeeping rules are followed (for example, assuring that limits of safe machine operation are not exceeded and that all tools are used properly). Reporting to supervisors on status and progress of work, and causes of work delays. Answer questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning, additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees). Prepare estimates and ordering of materials for construction, maintenance, repairs or improvements to equipment, systems and structures throughout the medical center. Participate in final inspections of Improvement projects and maintenance activities. Arranges print reviews and construction project inspections with maintenance staff. Process equipment into the preventative maintenance, equipment inventory, and lock out tag out software programs and shall be trained as and function as the Engineering Lock Out Tag Out expert designee. Works with project Engineers to obtain necessary equipment information. Researches manufacturer equipment maintenance requirements and assists with writing PM procedures. Other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires a considerable amount of walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may work from ladders and scaffolding. When operating equipment, the worker may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching, bending, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, legs, and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment. The incumbent carries, lifts, and handles parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds and, less often, up to 40 pounds. Occasionally, they lift or move with assistance moderately heaving objects weighing more than 50 pounds. The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area may be dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, bums, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles. The incumbent may be required to work with energized circuits and will, therefore, be required to use protective clothing and equipment to eliminate the hazards present. Incumbent is furnished personal protection equipment are required to perform the duties of the position. Incumbent is provided with safety shoes, eye protection and any other personal protective clothing or equipment necessary to the position.
