About USAID Pakistan Climate Smart Agriculture:

The recently awarded five-year USAID/Pakistan Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) activity is part of the U.S.-Pakistan "Green Alliance" framework, aimed at fostering bilateral cooperation to address climate, environmental, and economic challenges. This initiative focuses on building resilience within farming communities by promoting the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices and technologies. By increasing agricultural productivity and incomes sustainably, the Climate Smart Agriculture activity aligns with USAID’s goals of inclusive economic growth, gender equity, and environmental stewardship. Activities will be implemented in a context-sensitive manner to promote increased agricultural productivity; higher resilience to climate change; and economic participation and greater incomes of socially marginalized groups, women, and girls at different stages of agricultural production and processing.  In partnering with the private sector, civil society, farming communities and government stakeholders, Pakistan Climate Smart Agriculture Activity aims to maximize the effectiveness and impact of investments.

About the Role:

The Business Development Specialist will support the implementation of climate-smart practices and technologies by enhancing business opportunities within the agricultural sector. This includes fostering partnerships with private technology firms, Agri-research institutes, start-ups, farmers, and other stakeholders to promote the development and adoption of climate-resilient innovative agricultural technologies. The role focuses on collaborating closely with agriculture technology firms and enterprises enhancing their efficiency in developing and promoting Climate Smart Agriculture technologies and facilitating outreach to farmers for early adoption of the same. The incumbent will focus on improving market linkages, supporting firm growth, and strengthening the overall business environment for CSA technologies. This, in turn, is expected to foster a business environment that encourages the use of innovative agricultural technologies. It is a mid-level position with direct reporting to CSA Commercialization Specialist.

The specialist will ensure these practices and technologies are inclusive and accessible to women, youth, and socially marginalized groups.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies to promote climate-smart agricultural technologies and practices in the farming communities.

  • Identify business opportunities and market trends related to CSA and work with firms to align their business models for CSA adoption.

  • Provide guidance on business planning, financial management, and market development for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in the CSA value chain.

  • Build and maintain partnerships with private sector technology firms, government research institutes, farmer groups, and sector associations to support the promotion and scaling of CSA technologies.

  • Facilitate linkages between technology providers, farmers, and markets to promote adoption of climate-resilient solutions.

  • Work with subcontractors, resource partners and stakeholders to ensure sustainability and impact of business models focused on Climate Smart Agriculture.

  • Design and deliver training programs for technology firms, farmers and agribusinesses to enhance their understanding and adoption of CSA practices and technologies.

  • Provide technical assistance to private sector firms and farmer cooperatives in areas such as business planning, product development, and market expansion.

  • Support knowledge transfer related to CSA technologies, especially in terms of improving climate resilience in farming systems.

  • Work closely with the MEL team to monitor the progress of business development activities, CSA adoption, and overall project goals.

  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to business growth, technology adoption rates, and climate resilience outcomes.

  • Prepare reports and provide feedback on the success and impact of business development initiatives.

  • Collaborate with the CSA Commercialization Specialist and other team members to ensure the integration of business development activities with other components.

  • Provide regular updates and reports on business development activities, partnerships, and project progress.

  • Contribute to project planning, budgeting, and resource allocation in support of business development and CSA adoption.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, agriculture, or a related field

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in business development, preferably in the agriculture or agri-tech business development sector, with a focus on climate-smart solutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement business development strategies Strong understanding of climate change issues and their impact on agriculture, dairy and livestock in Pakistan.

  • Strong understanding of CSA technologies and practices.

  • Experience working with SMEs, farmer groups, and private sector firms in agriculture.

  • Excellent communication, partnership-building, and stakeholder management skills.

  • Ability to design and deliver capacity-building initiatives.

  • Proven experience in engaging with government agencies, private sector, academia, technology firms, and other agricultural stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in project management and reporting.

  • Excellent research, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Commitment to gender equity and social inclusion in technology adoption.

  • Fluency in English

    Preferred:

  • Master’s in Business Administration.

  • Strategic thinking and ability to identify business opportunities in a climate-smart context.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple stakeholders and work in cross-functional teams.

  • Flexibility to travel and work in rural areas to engage with farming communities

  • Fluency in Urdu and any regional language.

    Salary:

  • The annual salary will be determined in line with background and experience, per the local compensation plan.

  • A standard benefits package will be offered in addition to the base salary.
