ITW Senior Mechanical Project Engineer in Itasca, Illinois

Hi-Cone , a division of ITW, is a leading global supplier of ring carrier multi-packaging systems for the Alcohol & Non-Alcoholic Ready to Drink (NARTD) beverage markets, providing sustainable secondary packaging solutions to major Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) companies. Hi-Cone is looking to change the way the world sees secondary multi-packaging for the beverage industry. As the Sr Mechanical Project Engineer, you will drive growth through the optimization and innovative development of Hi-Cone’s sustainable portfolio of beverage packaging systems to maintain our best-in-class operational performance and total LCA. Your passion for innovation will help define and implement platform refresh strategies based on “80” customer feedback and turn Customer Back Innovation (CBI) learnings into actionable development projects for the development of next-gen systems. You will be responsible for leading the evaluation and development of new materials and product lines to define the future of sustainable packaging from concept to full-scale production. This is a perfect opportunity to showcase your expertise in all phases of the design process – brainstorming, conception, design, detailing, validation, in-field testing, and manufacturing launch while interacting with stakeholders across all functional areas of the organization.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate exceptional project management while coordinating multiple concurrent projects

  • Create innovative product designs to meet customer, manufacturing, and industry needs

  • Apply mechanical design skills, using 3D CAD modeling, to develop high-speed OEM packaging machinery and innovative packaging solutions.

  • Perform product and machinery testing to ensure form, fit, and function and compliance with customer and government standards.

  • Develop technical specifications and prepare documentation that adequately defines the project for manufacturing.

  • Resolve commercial design issues causing quality or customer efficiency problems with material or equipment changes as appropriate.

  • Coordinate the review, presentation and release of design layouts, drawings, analysis, and other documentation.

  • Interact with external and internal customers to understand pain points and identify potential innovations.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Materials Engineering

  • Minimum 3 years in product development with a focus on consumer packaging

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD Design Software including creating models, assemblies, and detail drawings, SolidWorks preferred

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and listening ability

  • Strong presentation skills to an audience of all levels of an organization

  • Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving background

  • Highly motivated, results oriented, and driven

  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment, with a high degree of flexibility and tolerance of change

  • Proficiency in full MS Office suite

  • Must be willing to travel up to 20% for project work, including some international travel
