Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA) provides leadership in patient care, education, clinical investigation, and scientific innovation and is one of the finest veterinary teaching hospitals in North America.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Animal Attendant- S05 to maintain the cleanliness of approximately 123 rooms in our Companion Animal Hospital (CAH), which used to provide veterinary services to over 23,000 patients annually.


As an Animal Attendant, you will be responsible specifically for :

  • Maintain hallways and other assigned floors, which include dust mopping and mopping daily, as well as stripping, waxing, and polishing as needed and as time allows.
  • Clean and disinfect all areas throughout the shift, which includes exam rooms between customers, trash removal, and removal and disposal of biohazardous wastes along with feces, urine, vomit, and other body fluids.
  • Record the daily census of inpatients in INC/ICU and ward areas when assigned.
  • Restock wards, treatment areas, and workrooms with appropriate supplies.
  • When time allows, and under the supervision of a licensed veterinary technician (LVT), assist with a variety of duties associated with patient care and maintenance of the Nursing Care Units, as well as other services in the Companion Animal Hospital to assure quality care for pets, primarily cats/dogs, but will include other species.
  • Assist the veterinarians and LVTs with the restraint of animals for medical procedures such as blood sampling and IV catheter placement; provide animals with a clean and comfortable environment, which includes cleaning and disinfecting cages and all other areas as assigned, as well as providing the animals with correct diets as ordered by the clinician.
  • Walk patients outside and collect urine/fecal samples as needed and record fecal/urine discharges, vomiting, appetite characteristics, and overall appearance of the patient on treatment sheets.
  • Assist technicians with answering phones in INC/ICU as needed and constant communication to coordinate treatment and cleaning duties.


**The Cornell University Hospital for Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to insure that adequate patient care and service needs are provided without interruption or exception.


The schedule will primarily be Tuesday through Saturday, 2:00pm - 10:30pm

Schedules may vary based on hospital needs and will include weekend and holiday shifts.


Required Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma with at least 6 months prior experience, including direct experience with companion animal handling in a veterinary facility using various holding techniques and in housekeeping/custodial/disinfection work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of basic infection control practices and the ability to adhere to and enforce those practices. Experience in the use of various disinfectants and proper procedures.
  • As this is a very physical job, Animal Attendants must have the ability to move/lift 50 lbs or more with assistance, have the ability to stand for extended periods of time as well as to kneel, and remain in a steady position during procedures or treatment of animals.
  • Strict adherence and enforcement of hospital infection control policies. Reliability is essential.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to enter specific information into patient records.
  • Must be able to work proactively as well as in a team environment. Must communicate well with others in a professional manner, including with students, veterinary technicians, clinicians, and clients, while using good judgment in setting priorities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced and often demanding environment while paying close attention to details and demonstrating a high level of initiative.
  • Rabies immunizations will be required, and the department covers the cost.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is helpful but not required.
