Pillsbury Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship:


The Leland C. and Mary M. Pillsbury Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship (PIHE), established in 2006, is Cornell University's home for entrepreneurship relevant to the hospitality industry and a resource for alum, faculty, and prospective and current students. We offer students, entrepreneurs, and faculty an expanding range of courses, programs, and activities focused on advancing students' entrepreneurship knowledge and mastery.

PIHE is the hub for Cornell students interested in pursuing an entrepreneurial career in a field relevant to the hospitality industry. PIHE team's faculty and accomplished entrepreneurs with students, to help them develop the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions.


PIHE is a source of information for those creating a hospitality business, managing a small and family-operated business, purchasing franchises, developing a corporate venture, funding a new venture, and being an innovator. PIHE brings industry professionals, faculty, and other stakeholders together, in multiple forums, to create and share knowledge pertaining to entrepreneurship and innovation.


Executive Director - Pillsbury Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship Opportunity:

The role of the Executive Director is to be responsible for successful operations leadership and management of the Center or Institute to realize its vision and mission. The Executive Director oversees and executes the strategic direction, major initiatives, and operations of the Institute, including developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the Institute's initiatives and programs. The Executive Director accomplishes annual targets, business development, financial planning and management, management of internal and external relationships, and oversight of unit administration. Along with the Academic Director, the Executive Director engages externally to achieve positive societal impact and center/institute success. Reporting into, and under the direction of the Academic Director, responsibilities of the executive director include, among others the following:

  • Under the direction of the Academic Director will determine the Center's/Institute's aspirations, strategy, and goals, adapting programming, business model, and operations accordingly.
  • Develop a global network of hospitality-relevant entrepreneurs with past, present, and desired future connections to the Institute, School, the College, and the University
  • Facilitate and organize entrepreneurial programming for students.
  • Mentor and guide students.
  • Foster knowledge creation through its programming, conferences, colloquia, round tables, competitions, etc.
  • Ensure the financial integrity and viability of the Center/Institute by determining, formulating, and overseeing the annual budget, strategic workforce planning, and management.
  • Forge and maintain relations of trust with key stakeholders, external partners, and funders.
  • The ED is responsible for managing the relationship with a board of advisors, including overseeing board member meetings and specific engagements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent project management skills. This includes developing the global network of hospitality relevant entrepreneurs, and delivering programming (conferences, colloquia, round tables, competitions etc.) in this area.
  • Fund raising, broadly defined: This includes marketing skills (developing and tailoring messages for programs and for funds), selling (the initiative to entrepreneurs), and customer relationship management (of friends and alumni of the College interested in entrepreneurship)
  • Thought leadership ability to drive development of a network of thought leaders and external visibility, with a goal to publish articles in the college's Business-Feed, Cornell's publications, and external press. The skills required include an understanding of entrepreneurial issues, willingness to reach out to scholars and experts around the world on these topics.
  • Qualifications include an appropriate advanced degree(s) (MBA, JD, Ph.D.), and experience with entrepreneurship. The ideal candidate will be a skilled professional with 5 or more years of work experience in business and academia.
  • Demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences.
  • Proven experience connecting diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing practices to business goals.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
