The Fleet Management Division is actively seeking three (3) Automobile and Light Truck Technician I.

This is service maintenance work at a skilled level in inspecting and performing preventive maintenance on light vehicles. The work requires knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used to service light equipment as well as the ability to perform preventive maintenance services which is learned on the job or through specialized training. Contacts require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others, and includes contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by procedures or precedents, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate method, technique, or procedure to follow. The work involves differing situations requiring use of judgment and search for solutions or new applications within ones known experiences. Work is performed both in a service garage environment and in the field where there are some risks and hazards are substantial, but are known, somewhat predictable and mostly controllable. Operates motor vehicles and uses equipment and tools necessary for performing preventive maintenance on light vehicles. Physical demands consist of bending, walking, standing, sitting, reaching, and lifting or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied, and the worker is permitted some latitude to set priorities subject to supervisor’s approval.
Examples of Work
Performs preventive maintenance such as changing hydraulic, transmission and engine oils and filters; checking and replacing lights to ensure proper functioning; visually inspecting and changing belts, hoses, and wiper blades; draining and replacing fluids in coolant systems; and checking brake pads, fluid levels/leaks, safety equipment, etc. on light equipment.
Performs diagnosis in field to determine whether major or minor repairs are needed.
Operates automobiles to move for service.
Determines which parts are needed through visual inspections and reviewing manuals. or computerized records.
Inspects and changes pre-mounted tires and rims.
Writes service requests.
Prepares and maintains records on jobs.
Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures in inspecting and performing preventive maintenance.
Knowledge of standard tools and equipment used in maintenance.
Ability to inspect, remove, and reinstall standard maintenance parts.
Ability to prepare and maintain maintenance service records.
Ability to establish and maintain inventory records.
Ability to read and apply job related materials.
Ability to operate tools and equipment necessary to complete the preventive maintenance function.
Ability to operate automotive equipment with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 26,000 pounds.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

One year of education and/or experience in performing preventive maintenance on light or heavy vehicles.
Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds is required.
One year of experience in servicing light vehicles is preferred.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The probationary period for this class is six months.
