JEA Protection & Controls System Tech II in Jacksonville, Florida

POSITION SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, performs and/or monitors, reviews and leads the work of other assigned personnel engaged in the installation, configuration, testing, calibration, and maintenance of protections systems, supervisory control and data acquisition systems, and metering and telemetry systems in accordance with applicable corporate policies and procedures and regulatory requirements.  Working knowledge of concepts, principles, methods, techniques, processes, practices, procedures and rules and regulations related to protections systems, control and data acquisition systems, and metering systems sufficient to perform a broad range of varied, non-routine activities such as those activities associated with maintenance, testing, functional testing, checking out and commissioning of substation, generation, distribution, and control center equipment.  Troubleshoots and solves complex problems, identifies and recommends responses to new and unusual circumstances or situations throughout the JEA electrical system.   Regular contact with others within the work unit and other units throughout the JEA system is required to obtain, clarify, or provide facts or information.   

  • Installs, configures, tests, calibrates, maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs protective systems including but not limited to protective relays, associated communications circuits, voltage and sensing circuits, DC batteries circuits, DC control circuits, electromechanical, digital or microprocessor based protective relay schemes, communication equipment, GPS clocks, communications processors/data concentrators, fault recorders, power line carrier equipment, reclosers, sectionalizers, instrument transformers, switchboard meters, annunciators,  electronic tap changer controls, and other electrical and electronic equipment associated with protection systems.
  • Installs, configures, tests, calibrates, maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs supervisory control and data acquisition systems including but not limited to microprocessor based remote terminal units, process control, communication equipment, GPS clocks, communications processors/data concentrators, digital input circuits, analog input circuits, digital and analog output control circuits and other electrical and electronic equipment associated with supervisory control and data acquisition systems.
  • Installs, configures, tests, calibrates, maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs metering and telemetry systems including but not limited to revenue metering equipment, analog telemetry equipment, transducers, communications equipment, instrument transformers, switchboard meters, and other electrical and electronic equipment associated with metering and telemetry systems.
  • Performs and/or monitors, reviews and leads the work of other assigned personnel.
  • Provides classroom and on-the-job training to others, as required.
  • Installs, tests, calibrates, maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs protective relays, microprocessor based protective relay schemes, audio tone relay communication equipment, fault recorders, power line carrier equipment, reclosers, sectionalizers, instrument transformers, switchboard meters, annunciators,  electronic tap changer controls, and other electrical and electronic equipment associated with system protection and controls.
  • Installs, modifies and checks equipment for new and upgraded electrical facilities.
  • Revises plans for as-built modifications.
  • Obtains operational clearances as required.
  • Performs switching to connect and disconnect feeder breakers to and from the transfer bus; to open and close 5kv-15kv metal clad breakers, including  racking them in and out; and to operate disconnect switches for isolating circuit breakers, reclosers, transformers, potential transformers, and related substation equipment.
  • Operates vital equipment to restore electrical power transmission and distribution circuit in emergencies.
  • Participates in system restoration, as required.
  • Maintains tools and equipment in safe and proper working condition.
  • Complies with safety rules and regulations and employs safe work practices.
  • Operates and maintains assigned vehicles.
  • May be required to operate the relay shop electronic lab.
  • Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications.
  • Performs other job-related work as assigned.

_OPEN REQUIREMENTS_: Possession of a two-year technical school degree in electrical, electronic, communications, computer technology, or related field. OR

An Associates Degree in electronics, electrical, communications, computer engineering technology, or a related field

OR Successful completion of Military Power Training School in Electrical, Electronic, Communications or Computer Technologies

AND

Minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience in an electric utility System Protection or equivalent experience with proven and solid experience in installations, configures, tests, calibrates, maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs of protections systems, supervisory control and data acquisition systems.

_LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION_: A valid drivers license is required prior to employment and must be maintained during employment in this classification.

/The salary for this position is $102,544 based on starting rate of $49.30 per hour/
