A Day in the Life

The Principal Design Automation Controls Engineer role designs, delivers, and supports equipment solutions and manufacturing platforms used in the development and manufacturing of innovative electronic medical products. It is responsible for the development and release of industrial automation solutions supporting new product introduction and manufacturing lines. It will be part of a team that work cross functionally to select and develop manufacturing processes, tooling, and equipment in a design for manufacturability environment intended to proof processing principles and supports high volume scalability. It facilitates flawless transition from technology, product development to production.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Provide design expertise and develop programming code for PLC’s, motion control, vision applications, robotic systems, and PC controlled equipment.

  • Provide technical expertise and leadership in process and equipment development

  • Establish the most effective, reliable, and cost-effective processing methods for manufacturing operations.

  • Build and develop contacts with external technical representatives, vendors, and industry experts to keep abreast of technological developments, new product introductions in the controls and system engineering field.

  • Ensure completion of appropriate and relevant documentation within area(s) of responsibility.

  • Drives equipment transfer activities, equipment installation and factory and site acceptance testing activities.

  • Develops and applies software engineering methods, theories and research techniques in the investigation and solution of technical problems.

  • Assessing architecture and hardware limitations, plans technical projects in the design and development of industrial automation software.

  • Defines and selects new approaches and implementation of CAD software engineering applications and design specifications and parameters.

  • May specify materials, equipment and supplies required for completion of projects and may evaluate vendor capabilities to provide required products or services.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor Engineering Degree

  • Requires a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

Nice To Have

  • PLC programming experience (Rockwell). Experience building new control systems.

  • Vision system design and integration for inspecting, locating, and positioning (Cognex, Vision Pro).

  • Experience with Robots (SCARA, Cartesian, Gantry) and Pick-and-Place systems

  • HMI software development and troubleshooting

  • Experience with servo controllers and motion control applications.

  • Applications development using an object-oriented language (i.e. C#, VB.Net, Python)

  • SQL Server, SQL Server Reporting Services, Java, and database design

  • Understanding of electrical network. Able to review and understand electrical schematics and control diagrams.

  • Experience in medical device, pharmaceutical, or electronic industry

  • Experience on process development and/or process improvement

  • Knowledge on 6-Sigma principles and methodology

  • Experience in a regulated environment with 21CFR Part 11

  • Proven communication, project management and analytical skills required.

  • Self-motivated, goal-oriented, team player
