POSITION DESCRIPTION Grant Accountant

INFORMATION Type of Position: Exempt Location of Work: Juneau, AK Salary Grade(s): 11-13 Hours of Work: M-F, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Employment Category: Regular, Full-Time

PURPOSE Administer and coordinate Tlingit and Haidas grant accounting and reporting, and general ledger accounting and reporting.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Reports To: Grant Accountant Supervisor Supervises: TBD Liaison To: Program Managers

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare complex, detailed monthly, quarterly, and closeout financial reports for external funding agencies
  • Reconcile grant budget to actual expenditures and prepare, review and post necessary adjusting journal entries to ensure that grants are not overspent and are in compliance with reporting requirements
  • Reconcile subsidiary accounts to ensure proper accountability and reporting with outside agencies
  • Determine the nature and extent of discrepancies and non-compliance and propose corrective action
  • Review trial balance for correctness and compliance with external financial reporting requirements
  • Independently review and gain thorough understanding of funding agency financial reporting requirements
  • Communicate with and seek clarification of funding agency requirements when necessary and work with grant managers to ensure compliance
  • Document all communication as it relates to clarification of requirements
  • Review the general ledger at month end and prepare and post adjusting journal entries
  • Analyze complex financial data and assist in the preparation of comprehensive financial report for management
  • Advise manager and administrative staff on the financial status of programs and individual accounts as necessary
  • Meet monthly reporting deadlines and ensure accuracy and completeness of the general ledger
  • Communicate with Finance staff and program managers to coordinate the receipt of financial information necessary to ensure timely monthly closing of general ledger
  • Stay up to date on changes in the Uniform Guidance and ensure Tlingit and Haida is in compliance with requirements
  • Assist in preparation of audit work papers for annual external financial statement audit
  • Assist in preparation of financial statements and provide information for inclusion in the footnotes to the financial statements
  • Work with the auditors to clear audit exceptions
  • Prepare supplemental schedules and reconciliations on an as needed basis during audit
  • Meet audit deadlines to ensure the timely issuance of annual audited financial statements
  • Represent Finance department in the event of field audits by granting agencies
  • Assist program managers in answering financial questions regarding grants
  • May supervise clerical and technician level employees including but limited to hiring, monitoring, coaching, staff development, evaluations, dispute resolution, progressive discipline, and if necessary termination
  • Other duties as assigned

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of fund accounting
  • Working knowledge of 2 CFR Part 200
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to use an integrated accounting software system, Microsoft applications, and electronic transmitting applications
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities in a constantly changing environment
  • Possess strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Possess excellent communication skills - verbal, written, and presentation
  • Possess accurate data entry and attention to detail skills
  • Ability to interpret, apply and explain laws, regulations and policies
  • Ability to identify discrepancies or inaccuracies in data and make corrections
  • Ability to be a team player

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (educatio , experience, skills)

  • Bachelors degree in Business Administration or Accounting
  • Three years of professional level experience as an Accountant
  • Two years experience with an automated accounting system
  • Valid Drivers License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)

  • Two years of supervisory experience

UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, requiring routine walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs. Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.
