John F. Kennedy Space Center Aerospace Engineer, AST, Navigation, Guidance, and Control Systems (Direct Hire) in Kennedy Space Center, Florida

Summary You will serve as the Ascent Guidance, Navigation, and Control Sub-System Manager, responsible for leading and approving human spaceflight technical tasking, requirements, hazard reports, and certification. This includes change package, issue, and risk resolution, and day-of-launch operations for the Guidance, Navigation, and Control ascent team for both Commercial Crew Program launch vehicle partners, in cooperation with technical counterparts in the Launch Services Program. Responsibilities Ensures Commercial Crew Launch Vehicle Partners adhere to all applicable Human Spaceflight requirements through review of deliverables and/or the application of NASA Independent Verification and Validation tools analysis. Reviews launch vehicle Hazard Reports, in conjunction with other vehicle systems, to ensure acceptable vehicle performance under conditions such as loss of vehicle control, insufficient performance, and element-to-element re-contact. Identifies and resolves launch guidance-, navigation-, and control-related issues, risk items, and change packages through review of applicable Launch Vehicle Partner technical products and/or NASA-led independent analysis. Assesses in-flight performance of Commercial Crew launches through post-flight data review, coordination of NASA independent analysis, and evaluation of any in-flight anomalies. Provides fleet insight for Commercial Crew Partner launch vehicles through post-flight data review, flight margin verification review, and/or independent analysis. Maximizes synergy between Commercial Crew Program and Launch Services Program technical team with respect to the guidance, navigation, and control discipline. Coordinates and participates in guidance-, navigation-, and control-related launch campaign activities for Commercial Crew missions, including day-of-launch winds support and launch vehicle flight software implementation test data review. Participates in the review of mission-specific flight software parameters, flight software test results, and change tickets as applicable to launch vehicle ascent guidance, navigation, and control. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: coordinating assessments of commercial launch vehicle analyses products via review of contractor results and/or independent analysis; performing technical assessments with integrated government and contractor teams to develop flight rationale for program leadership; and evaluating launch vehicle compliance with established requirements and processes. Education Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following: a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations. If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
