ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:

Based in the Seattle area (Kent, WA), the Corporate Sales & Use Tax Manager will have a unique opportunity to work on the Corporate team with coverage responsibility for a $450mm+ global manufacturing organization with plants and offices located across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. SHAPE Technologies designs and manufactures large robotics and automation systems, waterjet cutting machines, and ultrahigh pressure pumps. In this role, the Sales Tax Manager will report to our Global Corporate Controller and work closely with our Tax Director.

The Sales & Use Tax Manager will be responsible for sales and use tax compliance throughout the United States and Canada. We are looking for someone to ensure that the Shape entities are maximizing Avalara efficiency, reporting capabilities, and monitoring state sales tax nexus.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Avalara system compliance knowledge, including consideration of state sales tax nexus issues.

  • Timely preparation of various internal and external state sales and use tax reports and returns, determination of appropriate sales tax on revenue, and analysis of tax calculations.

  • Reconciliation of sales and use tax payments to the general ledger.

  • Recording monthly journal entries for sales and use tax.

  • Reviewing & preparing monthly/quarterly/semi/annual reports and returns of gross sales by state.

  • Timely preparation of information required or requested by auditors for states sales tax audits, as well as audit management.

  • Maintaining and verifying all sales tax exemption certificates.

  • Responding to inquiries from governmental agencies regarding tax notices.

  • Conducting sales and use tax research related to laws and current issues.

  • Reviewing tax rates and updates received from state and local tax agencies.

  • Communication with customers daily regarding tax status and problems with invoices.

  • Preparing property tax returns and pre- and post-audit work.

  • Managing Washington B & O & Canadian GST compliance.

  • Engage in daily interaction with team members, including professionals from other departments and management. This is a hybrid job, though the majority of time will be on site in our Kent facility.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Knowledge of financial analysis and reporting.

  • Ability to define problems, apply mathematical concepts, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Ability to use standard spreadsheet and database software or an accounting applications package designed for general accounting.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of products, with emphasis on Excel (immediate/advanced skills).

  • Experience with Avalara sales tax reporting.

SOFT SKILLS:

  • Strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and motivation to succeed.

  • Excellent communication (both written and verbal), organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Collaborative / ability to work well in a team environment.

  • Must possess good communication and time management skills.

  • Detail-oriented.

EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Business, Accounting, or Finance.

  • 4 to 6 years of accounting experience with emphasis on general ledger and sales tax accounting in either an accounting firm or corporate setting.

  • Experience with large volume Avalara sales tax reporting.
