Ketchikan Indian Community Overnite Shelter Support Associate in Ketchikan, Alaska

Job Summary

Shelter Support Staff provide support to shelter residents during overnight and weekend hours week on/week on 12 Hour Shifts from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Responsibilities includes providing a safe, clean environment, supporting and assisting guests residing in shelter, and documenting any safety/security concerns or rule violations.


Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicate necessary guest information to day staff to keep them informed.
  • Follow and enforce Shelter Guidelines, Policies, and Procedures with Shelter Guests.
  • Support and assist guests with their shelter needs as they arise (ex. questions, concerns, hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, and more).
  • Maintain safety and security of shelter property, and report concerns to Housing Director/On Call or to the authorities.
  • Ensure the privacy and safety of other guests by not confirming identity of other guests, and by not allowing anyone other than guests, staff, or case workers.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of shelter through performing housekeeping tasks outlined in Staff Task Lists (ex. sweeping, mopping, disinfecting).
  • Complete Shelter checks in guest areas and guest belongings with Security Officer or Program Director as necessary.
  • Complete Shelter Inventory and organizational/shelter upkeep duties as assigned.
  • Perform basic maintenance as needed (ex. changing light bulbs, plunging toilets) and report any major maintenance issues in the daily log or to Housing Director as needed.
  • Document in shift notes at least once per shift and complete proper documentation; including but not limited to task list checks off lists, incident reports, reasonable suspicion forms, and mandated reporter documentation/reporting duties.
  • Ability to pick up/drop assigned work shifts as needed.
  • Complete shadowing tasks as assigned when new team members join the support staff team.
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings and training.=
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience)

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one-year experience working in a customer service setting.
  • A combination of relevant experience, education, and training may substitute for education and experience requirements on a year-for-year basis.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional boundaries while working with clients.

Preferred Qualifications (Education and Experience)

  • Minimum of 3 years experience working in a public service or social services setting.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in crisis intervention and problem solving with the ability to diffuse situations without heightening the conflict.
  • Understanding of, or willingness to train in, areas such as trauma-informed care, mental health first aid, and de-escalation.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.
  • Skills in operating personal computers using a variety of computer software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, coworkers, and outside contacts.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal and tribal privacy laws and KIC policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).
  • Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with teams.
