Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe Habitat Biologist I in Kingston, Washington

Job Summary:

The Habitat Biologist I is responsible for the protection of endangered and threatened species and habitats for the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe's (PGST) Natural Resources Department. Duties include conducting biological and habitat assessments and making recommendations for conservation and habitat management. The Habitat Biologist I completes environmental reviews and administers technical assistance regarding tribal, state, local and federal regulatory processes. The position assists with the coordinated response of the Environmental Program staff for Section 7 consultation including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, and additional federal agencies. The position performs field surveys, collects data, prepares technical reports, maps critical areas, and may present findings to the Tribal Council and/or decision makers regarding specific project impacts.

Duties Include:

  • Evaluating the potential environmental impacts of proposed projects on listed species and critical habitats. Reviewing local, state, and federal permit applications and providing technical comments in coordination with the Environmental Program staff.

``` - Providing technical assistance with the PGST environmental protection code, environmental review guidance, and critical areas database. - Conducting site visits with Environmental Program staff for fish passage barrier, restoration and other projects, providing written comments on restoration, fish habitat, conservation habitat, and monitoring requirements to the team. - Conducting field surveys to identify plant communities and key habitats for restoration and conservation. Recording biological data and preparing technical reports. - Maintaining records of species and habitats on tribal lands in coordination with the PGST Cultural Resources Department and Natural Resources Department. - Creating maps of critical areas for conservation on the Tribe's land and throughout the Tribe's usual and accustomed areas. - Developing restoration and resource management goals for the PGST forest management and conservation plans in coordination with the Environmental Program Manager, Forest & Conservation Program Manager and the Research and Monitoring Program. - Managing invasive species removal and native plant restoration on the PGST's land in coordination with the Natural Resources Department staff. - Monitoring conservation values on the PGST's lands and making recommendations for conservation maintenance and management. - Coordinating with PGST partners to implement planting and restoration projects on adjacent lands. - Assisting with environmental planning, shoreline management, natural resource management, forest management and restoration projects as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in conservation biology, ecology, wildlife biology, botany or related field and three years of related professional experience is required. A bachelor's degree in conservation biology, or related field and at least six years of professional experience may substitute for the above requirements.
  • Licensing/Certification: Valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Proficiency with R, GPS, ArcGIS and/or QGIS preferred.

Other Important Skills:

Experience with conducting biological and/or habitat assessments.

Ability to verify Endangered Species Act compliance.

Knowledge of native plant communities and conservation biology.
