Conservation Legacy Stewards VISTA: Freshwater Illustrated-University of TN in Knoxville, Tennessee

Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

This position is a 365 day (1 year) public service term lasting from June 3, 2024 – June 2, 2025.

Living Allowance: $62.69/day ($22,881.85/year)

About the Site:

The University of Tennessee Extension is the outreach and engagement arm of the land grant university. We are partnering with the Freshwater Illustrated to equip teachers and Tennessee 4-H Agents with curriculum and hands-on learning opportunities for youth to prepare them for careers in natural resources fields. Our mission for improving the lives of Tennesseans through education aligns with the motivations of Freshwater Illustrated to provide high-quality educational opportunities for youth through their Water Teachers program. This program would be attractive to a VISTA member hoping to make real impacts with youth and communities towards enhancing environmental stewardship. The VISTA would have the opportunity to be involved with curriculum development, direct instruction, teacher trainings, and community development. There would be many opportunities for professional development as well as networking and building relationships with allied organizations.

Member Duties:

This VISTA member will engage in activities associated with youth development and community engagement. The activities will include, but not limited to:

  • Working with local communities to understand their needs related to educational experiences for youth in natural resources fields.

  • Identifying and connecting with local partners allied in environmental stewardship.

  • Recruiting teachers and 4-H Agents into the Water Teachers program.

  • Organizing community events.

  • Developing promotional materials to recruit teachers and volunteers.

  • Engaging with volunteers to build career portraits and create shadow opportunities.

  • Conducting program evaluation and assessment.

  • Report writing, identifying grants, and writing proposals.

  • Supporting participating teachers and 4-H Agents in their local school programs.

  • Presenting at conferences and meetings.

  • Creating original curriculum and outcome-oriented materials for use in career development programming.
