Kodiak Area Native Association Addictions Counselor in Kodiak, Alaska
The Addictions Counselor works in the Behavioral Health (BH) department and provides quality substance use treatment services to youth, adults and families within the KANA service region. Works closely with coworkers to coordinate care for clients and contributes to a supportive recovery environment. Offers individual, group, and family counseling; participates in KANA and community-driven substance abuse prevention initiatives.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnder the direct supervision of the BH Director, job incumbent may be assigned from the following representative duties:

- Develop therapeutic helping-relationships with clients that are based on unconditional positive regard, empathy, and honesty that is balanced with grace.
- Conduct treatment and support activities that emphasize traditional and cultural values as a source of engagement and resilience for clients.
- Provide individual, family, and group counseling to youth, adults, and elders.
- Complete substance use disorder assessments using DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and ASAM placement criteria.
- Develop a treatment plan with special consideration to cross-cultural and dual diagnosis concerns. Ensure appropriate implementation of treatment plan.
- Successfully manage and organize 25 direct patient hours per week; communicate frequently with the BH Intake Coordinator to ensure that incoming clients are placed quickly and efficiently when there is an opening. Number of direct hours may be reduced if assigned other duties.
- Receive direction from the BH Clinical Director regarding clinic processes, programming, and expectations; engage in regular clinical supervision with BH Clinical Director or designee to incorporate outcome-informed feedback into clinical practice.
- Participate in and coordinate programs of recovery, such as Family Education Groups, Community Drug and Alcohol Forums, and behavior health grant funded community/village projects.
- Engage in community outreach, education, and support that focuses on substance use disorders, relapse prevention, recovery and resilience, and other related topics.
- Work closely with community referral sources, including medical providers, local law enforcement agencies, Office of Childrens Services, and other military/civilian organizations.
- Complete administrative and clinical documentation in a timely manner in order to maintain program compliance within the guidelines established by Kodiak Area Native Association, State of Alaska, Medicaid and other regulatory agencies.
- Participate in outcome-informed treatment practices, to include engagement in Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM), regular clinical supervision, review of session recordings, and incorporation of clinical feedback into practice in order to achieve best outcome.
- Engage in professional development activities to include completion of CEUs towards certification, additional therapeutic trainings, and the application of Deliberative Practice to clinical care.
- Attend required training and meetings; work toward becoming a Qualified Addictions Professional as part of professional development plan.
- Participate as a member of substance-use related committees, coalitions, or forums where requested.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThis job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Requirements
Associates degree from an accredited university in psychology, counselin , or related field preferred; equivalent education and/or experience accepted. Must be certified or have the ability to become certified as a State of Alaska Chemical Dependency Counselor I or equivalent within one year of hire; Chemical Dependency Counselor II or equivalent within two years of hire preferred.
Two years of work experience in the behavioral health or related field strongly preferred, and must be familiar with the dynamics of substance abuse and addiction, recovery and relapse prevention. Experience working in rural Alaska communities/villages strongly preferred.
